Some more info on immigration/ DACA: DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, is a program initiated by Obama in 2012 to protect children brought here illegally from being deported (even as adults). -DACA recipients have NO PATH to become legal citizens -they have to renew their DACA "permit" every two years at a cost of about $600.00 -this allows them to work, pay taxes and attend school legally -they do not qualify for any government funded programs including grants for college tuition -they cannot leave the country unless completing a long application process for permission to travel outside the US -their status is revoked if they commit a crime -most have lived almost their entire life in the US My opinion is this is basically a program to legalize indentured servitude. They work and pay taxes like the rest of us without the benefits of being an American citizen, and no possibility of ever becoming one unless they marry a US Citizen. There are roughly 600,000 DACA recipients in the US. In his first term, Trump offered amnesty to the DACA or "Dreamers" in exchange for funding for the border wall and Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi refused - bc immigrants are pawns in their political game. I think the DACA program should be revoked. Any DACA recipient here currently should be given the option over the next few years to become a legal citizen without having to marry someone to do it. And they should be given a discount on their fees based on what they have already been paying every two years to renew their DACA permit. Its a terrible program that was disguised as humane. The kids had no choice being here bc their parents brought them here. I believe the compassionate thing is to change it and allow them to become US Citizens.
