Happy Global Accessibility Awareness day! Reminder that the world isn't split into “accessibility users” and “normal users,” and the more you treat accessibility as essential, rather than peripheral, the better it will be for ALL your users.

@CKWang I've found aligning on goals, and especially user goals/workflows is best way to provide technical leadership as senior leader. Whenever I'm anxious about technical approach I realize I've been unclear in goals/purpose/intent/needs

All the pieces are there: • Intent and context-driven app launch. • Transfer learning API for devs to train new models. • Simultaneous front and back camera feeds for AR. • Framework for real-time semantic video annotation. • Consistent UI toolkit for handoff across devices.

Apple's new conversational UI tools flip the traditional app interaction model on its head. Rather than open an app, you invoke a need and Siri routes the intent to an app. Today, it's through dialog. Tomorrow, it will be through AR.

New macOS Catalina feature Apple told me they’re extremely excited for—aside from Voice Control—is something called Hover Text. Basically, hover your mouse on a piece of text anywhere in the system and it enlarges it. Fonts, colors, sizes, all customizable up to 128pt.

Apple confirmed to me Accessibility, the menu, has been moved to front page of Settings. Also, selecting acccessibility features is now part of first-run “setup buddy” process. I’m told goal of both moves was to increase visibility of accessibility feature set as a whole.

We’ve also got a new Accessibility API for SwiftUI apps, which we’ll discuss in the session. For the first time, it’s a unified accessibility API across all platforms.

I worked on the Accessibility side of the new SwiftUI framework. Happy to chat about this during WWDC. We are also giving a talk about Accessibility and SwiftUI (10 AM on Friday in Hall 4) and a lab immediately afterwards. Come and learn!

Shift to voice interfaces trained on "typical" speech omits those whose speech doesn't fit within the model. I'm encouraged that @Google is researching how to develop custom models that enable access and new modes of communication. 9to5google.com/2019/05/07/goo…

Just stumbled upon an awesome collection of assistive features that Microsoft built into Office suite. Immersive Reader is even in Outlook's web interface. microsoft.com/en-us/educatio…

All of the pieces for a fully voice-driven platform are there, including an intent framework and custom language models, all on-device.

Ah, so, while all of the pieces are there, placeholder and wildcard values aren’t supported. Still an incredible accessibility aid.

It appears that you can build voice-driven apps starting with iOS 12.
