An important study for all schools that have gone tech heavy. Typed notes = ⬆️ more notes Hand written notes = ⬆️ more learning link.springer.com/article/10.100…

Does anyone know a simple tool for those in schools who want to work in an evidence-informed way to evaluate the evidence that interventional studies provide? It's a topic @ajvisscher3 and I are thinking of exploring (we have the paper by @SGorard and the book by @DTWillingham).

Many curriculum materials don’t emphasize ways to get students to remember the information, and teachers have been told they should skip the remembering part and go directly to “higher level thinking”. The result is so obvious: many kids can’t even begin to discuss the topic.

I described in the past that the skills shortage will persist for an uncomfortably long time. The shortage is essentially universal but in some professions it worries me more than in others. The fact that we are running out of teachers is terrible and has scary downstream consequences in our knowledge economy. Open- plan classrooms are now considered a “40-year-old fad” unsuitable for learning, but hundreds of Victorian students could be left to learn in the distracting and noisy spaces. #Echobox=1690079510-2" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">theage.com.au/national/victo…

I've been digging into this today. What is Oracy, and why do I not use the term? First, we start with EEF's page on it, which defines the term and gives its impressive outcomes.

"Oracy" is one of those words that can be banned in my opinion. It can mean anything, ranging from "Students speak" to "All students get asked a question at some point" to "Let's do loads of group work" to "Structured debate" We need words that convey meaning better.

@MrSimpson07 Finally! Heading what the student teachers who come to our school are learning at uni is sometimes horrifying!

@Emma_C_Macey @Brad1968 @msrebeccabirch @QueenwoodSchool We used Dunlosky to shape ‘study skills’ teaching a few years ago. Accessible paper for teachers (+ students & parents) alike. Stand-alone programme in year 7, embedded into other levels (esp 9-11 prior to exams) and alignment with external speakers. + parent resources.

Study Smart - a great model for other schools to learn from! Research shows the need to implement effective moderate and low strategies! Congratulations @msrebeccabirch and Emma Macey! #SBPIllawarra2023

An extraordinary amount of page turning going on for @PepsMccrea as people hurriedly take notes. Haven’t seen note taking this furious for years! Real risk of paper cuts here. #teachingmattershobart

Study from Norway shows banning smartphones significantly increases girls' average grades, improves their test scores in mathematics, increases their likelihood of attending an academic high school track, and decreases incidents of bullying.

Tasmanian Premier @jeremyrockliff quotes former UK PM Tony Blair, saying ‘what matters is what works’ in displaying a commitment to evidence-informed teaching practice. Also comments on the unhelpful debate that has delayed the implementation of what works #teachingmattershobart
