Pretty much every smart person I know has a ChatGPT tab open while they work now. Amazing how fast that happened.

Managing the coach/parent with the offspring/athlete relationship can be challenging but if managed well it can be awesome! Here’s a thread of stuff me and the old man believe have made the journey so far fun and allowed us to work together pretty well for the last 10 years:

🧐 Developing a philosophy - over time we have developed sayings and analogies that hold us both accountable. We hold each other accountable to make sport fun and interesting.

⏱Time - it takes time, a good coaching relationship doesn’t happen overnight. Also making time to be father and son, where we don’t talk about sport in recent years this has been DIY and beach walks with the dog.

✅ Coaching the whole - come comp day there’s one focus but on the daily, I feel supported in school/career, relationships and other interests.

📈 Not holding grudges - Home and family business doesn’t spill in to sport. Issues that arise during training or competitions are dealt with immediately, lessons are learnt and then aren’t discussed ever again.

🤓 Emotional Intelligence - As family there is no mask, no facade you can’t hide from your feels. Learning when exactly to address emotional events around comp and training takes time but knowing there’s someone who has your back in your environment is very reassuring.

🏋️‍♀️🏋️‍♂️ Having Training Partners - Having good training partners allows for the separation of the dual relationship the best of all in my experience.

🗣 Difficult conversations - learning to have difficult conversations around expectations of each other can be challenging at first but prevents gripes and inconveniences become problems or arguments.

🤔 Challenging each other - As a senior athlete I feel empowered to ask questions and make suggestions. This once again doesn’t happen overnight, as a stroppy teenager coach/dad wouldn’t rise to my irritating or smartass comments.

🗺 Belief in the journey - Ultimately as the athlete I have trust that my coach wants me to succeed as much as I do. Having faith in a coach and the environment is key.

🤝 Being open to opportunities - Coach/Dad would seek out coach development opportunities and reach out to coaches to learn and encouraged me to do the same. As the athlete I feel free to go out and talk to athletes/coaches and share ideas within the group.
