He would have been a tech, maybe writing down vital signs & passing water. He’s not licensed for anything-maybe a blood glucose finger stick .

Paramedic working ICU- I walked into a patients room. He started talking about sports. Then his children, and his wife. How he missed them. O2 Sats 97%. Heart rate 70-80. Patient on high flow oxygen. He was dealing with some slight anxiety. Diagnosed with Covid, already vaccinated. As I was assessing him he said he “didn’t understand why he was in the ICU with Covid when they told him people that get the vaccine don’t get this sick from Covid?” I told him the news/TV has not been telling the truth. And I apologized. He was very kind. Saying “it’s not your fault.” He then talked about his job and how he loves what he does. His regulars and how he appreciated the kindness of people. He called me a “hero.” For working through Covid. After some conversation I left the room. The rest of my shift I would periodically check in on him. No change in condition. Prior to leaving, time to get off shift, I stopped in and said goodnight. He was still a bit anxious. I told him to try and relax the best he could and to get some sleep. I explained that patients with severe anxiety often start receiving anxiety meds and many get placed on the ventilator after that occurs. He understood. Told me “it wasn’t that bad” and we said goodnight. I gave my report to the incoming nurse and then left the hospital. The next day I arrived to find that he was vented. The nurse that came in after me who I was now receiving report from said “over night the doctor decided to treat his anxiety.” The patients Sats dropped severely after the anxiety medication and they vented him. Two days later, he was dead. Thats how it went. One, after another. I don’t like being called a hero. I pray for their families daily. I wish I could’ve done more. God bless
