I think Ben needs to watch more Drew Allar tape 😂 One thing Allar undeniably has is the ability to make ‘wow’ throws that very very people on the planet can get away with. It’s not the ‘wow factor’ that needs work; it’s the consistency.

Even if you think the Steelers have a 0% chance to win a title this year with Rodgers (which is a fair take), I still think having Aaron as the QB1 this year is still what's best for the team this season, not only for the short-term future, but for the LONG-TERM future at the position as well. Let me explain: ⬇️ I understand people want to 'know' if Allar/Howard can play this year because of the possibility of potentially drafting a RD1 QB in 2027, but if you rush them out there before they're ready, the chances of this being a wasted, non-competitive season goes up exponentially, which would be a shame because I think this roster is actually pretty darn solid. And frankly, that's how bad teams manage their QB situation because they continually play their young QBs before they're ready & there is constant turnover at the position as a result. Good teams that do a great job developing QB talent like the the Packers and Chiefs don't rush developmental QBs out there before they're ready. They remain patient, provide them with an opportunity to master their fundamentals before throwing them out there, and give them smart veteran mentors to show them how the job is done before they have to do it themselves. That's what the Steelers are trying to provide for Allar in particular, and that's a smart strategy to try and get the most out of Allar's awesome physical skillset down the road & give him the best possible chance of becoming THE steal of the 2026 NFL Draft and the team's next great franchise QB. On the flip side, even if the Steelers win 10 games and lose in the 1st round again with Rodgers at QB1, at least you still put the younger guys (particularly Allar) in the best position to actually develop & have success down the road by giving him much needed time to fix his footwork in particular, but also an excellent mentor in Aaron Rodgers, who's probably the world's leading expert on how to play QB in a Mike McCarthy offense. I personally think if you have the opportunity to give Allar the chance to learn from Rodgers and you choose deny him that opportunity, it would be straight up malpractice and you don't have Drew's best interest at heart from a developmental standpoint. If at the end of the season you're impressed with what Allar is doing behind the scenes & he's taking well to the coaching, great, start him in 2027 with Howard as his backup/fallback option if he faceplants. If not, great, try to draft a QB you like in RD1 next year. The opportunities to at least trade up for a QB if needed next year should be there if that's the path they would choose, even if they end up winning double-digit games again with Rodgers as the QB1. For the time being, though, PIT's focus should be on putting Allar in the best position to succeed, and IMO that doesn't involve playing him in Year 1 unless he proves to be a really a quick learner & shows he's ready for it and gets the chance to play because of a Rodgers injury this year and/or the playoffs are out of reach at the end of the season.

I don’t have Super Bowl expectations for the Steelers with or without Aaron Rodgers. I stand by the opinion that I’d rather just roll the ball out and let Drew Allar and Will Howard battle it out. Either way, you’re gonna have to figure out if either one can be the future.

Like it or not, the level of investment makes a different in the kinds of opportunities these players get. Just the way it works, man. Allar was a 3rd rounder vs. Will who was a 6th rounder. Because of that, Howard is going to just have to be head and shoulders better than Allar and then capitalize on his opportunity when and if he gets it, because he’s probably only going to get 1 chance if he gets any at all. Wishing Will nothing but the best though.

Guys, please understand the difference between saying its a good thing to give a highly talented but raw QB like Drew Allar a similar situation to enter his NFL career as Patrick Mahomes (another highly talented but raw prospect coming out), and saying Allar is going to be Patrick Mahomes or replicate the same success he's had in KC (which is obviously extremely unlikely because only Mahomes himself has done what he's done to this point in his career). Those are 2 COMPLETELY different things. 😂
Jack Sperry@jack_sperry

What has me excited about Drew Allar being drafted by the Steelers is he now has a chance to the get the Patrick Mahomes treatment here in Pittsburgh, assuming Rodgers is back for another season, which it sounds like he will be. The Steelers are trying to apply the lessons from the success KC had in finding & developing Mahomes and are using that blueprint to try and find their next franchise QB. Incredibly talented but raw QB coming out with star-level upside gets the opportunity to be coached up by an offensive minded head coach from a west coast offense background with a specialty in developing QB talent & sitting behind a veteran for a year before inheriting a playoff-caliber roster. It was the perfect setup for Pat, and I think it’s the perfect setup for Drew as well. Even better, PIT didn’t need to invest nearly as much in Drew from a draft capital standpoint as KC did in Pat; they get all that upside for just a 3rd round selection. And people always forget the Chiefs were heavily criticized at the time for making that decision as well, for pretty much the same reasons people don’t like the Allar pick here in Pittsburgh (bad footwork, not accurate enough, not enough team success in college, etc) If there’s even a 20% chance Drew could be the next great franchise QB here in Pittsburgh (and with this setup I think the odds are at least that high), that pick was absolutely worth the investment, especially given the fact that this team didn’t have a legitimate long-term plan at QB on the roster (sorry Will Howard fans), and now they have one! It’s also worth mentioning that the Steelers need to compete with QBs like Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Burrow, Maye, Lawrence, and Herbert, and that’s just in the AFC. If you want to consistently compete with those guys & those teams, you gotta try to find a QB that can feasibly reach that level of upside, and Allar certainly fits that bill with his insane arm talent if he takes well to NFL coaching & development. Just like drafting any other ‘boom or bust’ type of QB prospect, there’s definitely a chance Drew ends up never being a good NFL QB, but with three 3rd rounds pics, this was a luxury pick for Pittsburgh, and when you pair his level of upside with the ideal setup for development plus the relatively low opportunity cost for a guy that could be the next face of Steeler football, you get the potential for this to be one of the greatest picks in the history of the franchise. Now…we can only hope Drew takes this incredible opportunity and runs with it just like Patrick did in KC. It sure worked out well for them; I’m hoping the Steelers are successful in recreating even a fraction of that success with Drew in the years to come.

Herbert’s concerns at the time weren’t around the physical stuff; that’s why he was drafted where he was. The perceived concerns were the accuracy & mental processing. Some felt he wouldn’t be able to operate an NFL offense. Obviously they were wrong, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t any sort of risk involved in taking a player with that profile.

Wait @FarabaughFB I really appreciate your perspective & opinion my friend, but are you saying here that Mahomes, Allen, and Herbert all came into the league displaying the ‘attributes’ that you mentioned here (footwork, accuracy, mental processing, pocket management, etc) on their college film, or am I misunderstanding your position here? Cuz that is very much NOT the way I remember it, and if they did, I think they would have all gone #1 overall in their respective drafts because of the physical tools they brought to the table, but they didn’t, and it was for a reason. All of them eventually developed those attributes you mention at the pro level, but I remember all of those guys being described as raw, toolsy, developmental ‘boom or bust’ types of prospects coming out that were criticized for some combination of their footwork, accuracy, decision making, pocket management, etc. Lamar was another guy that was viewed that way, and the list goes on with QBs like Love, Watson and Hurts who also weren’t close to finished products coming out, either IMO. That’s not necessarily saying Allar is going to successfully make the same steps in development those guys made & become that caliber of QB in the league, but we’ve seen several QB prospects that have been labeled as ‘boom or bust’ or developmental guys come out & develop during their time in the league when the get better coaching &end up being better pro passers than they were college passers. With a year to sit and develop likely behind a hall of fame QB, an offensive minded head coach with a history of developing QB fundamentals, and eventually inheriting a playoff-caliber roster around him, is it really bad process to spend 1 of your 3 round 3 picks on a guy with the upside that Allar brings if you believe in the kid and think he can take steps forward in his development at the pro level? To me, I think it’s a pretty smart strategy to try and get a franchise QB without having to bottom out to get someone in the top 10, and it seems the have a legit plan for his development this year & know what they need to focus on with him. And if it doesn’t work and Allar stinks, it sucks to lose a round 3 pick, but it’s not like they’re mortgaging the future on him. For the upside I think it’s more than worth the risk, especially because they have the infrastructure in place to maximize their chances of Drew becoming the next developmental success story at the QB position if he has it in him.

@GlobeStoreSanta @FarabaughFB That strategy can work. So can getting a super talented, developmental guy in round 3 and let him sit & develop for a year behind a hall of fame QB & one of the best QB developers of the last 2 decades.
