COACHES SPOTLIGHT: When Ayla Guzzardo took over at McNeese State, she inherited a program coming off nine straight losing seasons. In just one year, she has already helped lead the Cowgirls to their first 20-win season in a decade. Before arriving at McNeese, Guzzardo guided Southeastern Louisiana to its only NCAA Tournament appearance during the 2022–23 season and followed that with the most wins in a single season in school history. She brought that same approach with her, and the impact has been immediate. McNeese now sits at (21–4) overall and (15–1) in conference play with six games remaining in the regular season. Last season, the Cowgirls finished (10–21). This year’s 11-win improvement is the largest jump in women’s college basketball, and they are now closing in on the program’s single-season win record. Six of Guzzardo’s top seven scorers followed her from Southeastern Louisiana, but freshman forward Dakota Howard has been leading the way, pacing the team in scoring at (13.0) points per game, along with (6.0) rebounds and (2.7) steals. It has been 14 years since McNeese last reached the NCAA Tournament, but with the way this group is playing, that could be about to change.

@tracywolfson Unfortunately it’s necessary. As a former college and hs official, and coach, I’ve seen a lot of antics take away from the game. Unsporting behavior keeps getting worse. Parents and coaches won’t address so rules have to be put in place to clean up competition.

My son’s high school basketball league just sent a note out saying any child that does any type of celebration after a shot will receive a technical. Curious what people’s thoughts are on this and is this happening in your area?
