I think this idea that United need to challenge for the title next season is mental. We're in a rebuild, last summer it was about fixing the goal scoring problem which it's fair to say we've done. This summer it's fixing the midfield problem, and addressing other issues if we can. Next summer will be defence, then it's go time. We've not had European football, or any cup comps this season. You're in dreamland if you think the current squad is good enough or even big enough to go far in any cup competitions, and push for the title. It's going to be a much harder season, next season.. We seemingly get stuck in this cycle of "let's rebuild", then having an extraordinarily good season given the circumstances and all of a sudden overnight the goalposts shift and we think we're back?? Arsenal are a great blueprint for a rebuild, it took them 3 years to even get close to challenging, and whilst they've fallen short a couple times they've proven they rebuilt into a team good enough to compete every year. That's what we need for United. Honestly, next season I will be very happy with some very strong, very capable, young(er) midfielders to bolster the side, a domestic cup and top 5. That would be a great success, retain UCL football, win some silverware and continue to build on a strong foundation. Don't get me wrong, if circumstances change and we're in a title race by March I'll be all for it, but I can't see it happening. I just feel like the people turning their nose up at Carrick staying on have no clue what position the club is really in. I would rather we spent 2/3 more years building a side that can compete for multiple years, then try to lure some world class coach in, sign one or two big names and trick ourselves into thinking we're back for it all to fall apart by December. Sustainability > Dopamine.
