How I almost lost $3,000 buying Pokémon sealed booster boxes from China. A cautionary tale. English boxes are expensive, so I pivoted to Japanese sets so my girls and I could still rip packs. I found a vendor selling boxes for $80, way below the $120 market rate. I assumed it was a simple currency arbitrage opportunity. I bought a test box and 5 boxes from China. The shrink wrap and seals looked perfectly identical to my US-bought box. I even pulled a cheap SR. I felt confident, so I bought another 5 boxes and then I negotiated a bulk deal and bought another 25 boxes. That is when the math stopped making sense. I ripped through the next massive batch and got zero real hits. Worse, I pulled the exact same sub $5 full arts over and over. Statistically, getting the exact same dead pools across that many boxes is near impossible. Then I saw a warning from AJ about resealed Chinese packs. And he even shared some tips on how to identify it. So I dug through my trash. Every single pack I had opened had the exact same vein. I immediately called eBay. The first rep was helpful and I got my return going on the first 10 boxes. I figured I had to receive my other 25 booster boxes before I could return those AND who knows... Maybe this guy just happened to have 10 bad boxes across two different sets. When I got my third delivery I ripped 5 more boxes and the same exact full arts... nothing over $5. So I called eBay again before I even got the last delivery and the second rep basically implied that I only had a 50/50 shot at a refund. He claimed that because I opened the packs, I technically damaged the seller's property. And my biggest takeaway was that leaving an honest review could trigger a spiteful counter-claim and some random eBay case manager will then decide if I am screwed or not. He said I should leave an honest review but also basically play nice? I just got my refund for everything, but the system is flawed. The seller played dumb and blamed his "supplier," confirming he sells second-hand boxes. Just pay market price and do not play with fire. eBay might not back you up when you get scammed. What would you have done?
