a depressingly high percentage of people are more interested in finding and maintaining belonging in a community than making sure their beliefs about morality, society, and religion make sufficient sense and are willing to sacrifice the latter for the sake of the former.

@JoshuaLWatson I do, that’s why my mental health got a lot better after undergrad when I made friends in philosophy club

@jacleo13 Having even a few reasonable friends who are serious about the truth seems important to me.

@JoshuaLWatson I don’t know, since this is been one of the big struggles in my life, part of me is pessimistic about it being possible to have the type of belonging religions have in a secular fashion (other than perhaps sports, which have their own sort of jingoism)

@jacleo13 It would be nice if there were more opportunities for community so that people had more options and didn't feel so much pressure to join ones that are going to ask us to deeply misunderstand things to belong.

There are just so many people in the AI convo who need to read Neil Postman. The constant assertions/assumptions that all technologies are neutral tools dependent on the user's morals are stunningly naive. You challenge that assumption & people keep repeating it like a catechism.
