After years of organizing and speaking out, today marks a major step forward. U.S. Representatives @CongressmanRaja (IL) and @RepDarrenSoto (FL) have introduced the Puerto Rican People’s Power Restoration Act of 2026 to abolish the Financial Oversight and Management Board (aka La Junta), imposed on Puerto Rico a decade ago. For ten years, this unelected body has overridden Puerto Rico’s elected leaders and imposed austerity that puts Wall Street ahead of the Puerto Rican people. This moment was made possible by the tireless advocacy of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, the @Pwr4PuertoRico coalition, partner organizations, and elected officials from various states who have fought to restore democracy and self-determination for Puerto Rico. The fight continues, but today is a powerful step forward. 🇵🇷✊🏽 #PuertoRico #EndLaJunta #Democracy

Today, the Puerto Rican Cultural Center joined Illinois Unidos and the Puerto Rican Agenda to raise the alarm about the nearly $5 million in prevention and public health funding that has been denied to our community, putting essential services for thousands of Chicago families at risk. We urge state and local leaders to use Rainy Day or emergency stabilization funds to protect prevention, chronic disease, and community health programs serving historically disadvantaged communities across Chicago. #HealthEquity #ProtectPublicHealth #HumboldtPark

From Barrio Borikén to Washington, the call is clear: end La Junta de Control Fiscal. Today, we welcomed @CongressmanRaja to Chicago’s Puerto Rican Cultural District in Humboldt Park to celebrate the introduction of the Puerto Rican People’s Power Restoration Act of 2026, legislation to abolish the fiscal control board imposed on Puerto Rico. Community leaders, small business owners, and allies gathered in solidarity to demand democracy, dignity, and self-determination for Puerto Rico. ¡Raja no se raja!

Today we commemorate the birth of our organization’s namesake, Juan Antonio Corretjer, who was born in Ciales, Puerto Rico (1908-1985). He was a poet, journalist, and political activist. Throughout his life, he devoted his art and political work to Puerto Rico’s national identity and independence movement. His poetry is known for its powerful patriotism, emotional language, and profound sense of cultural pride. The poem "Boricua en la luna” remains one of his most iconic works, centering Puerto Rican identity and reclaiming what it means to be a “boricua”: «De una lágrima soy hijo y soy hijo del sudor y fue mi abuelo el amor único en mi regocijo del recuerdo siempre fijo en aquel cristal del llanto como quimera en el canto de un Puerto Rico de ensueño y yo soy Puertorriqueño, sin na, pero sin quebranto.» 📸: “Boricua en la luna” mural by Chicago artist Luis Muñoz #HumboldtPark #BarrioBoriken #Boricuaenluna

This weekend, the Puerto Rican Cultural Center and the diaspora community proudly launched “Jolgorio Boricua en Humboldt Park: 250 Years without Kings, Tyrants, or Colonies” — a powerful gathering centered on self-determination and sovereignty for Puerto Rico. The event united local community members and representatives from seven states in vibrant conversation about the urgency, vision, and concrete paths for the island to move beyond its colonial status. Thank you to all who participated, to the PRCC staff, and to @urbantheater and Ola Barra Cocina Lounge for generously opening their space and helping make this possible. Ald.
