The best movie out this week, and of the year so far, is Satyajit Ray's restored 1970 masterpiece DAYS AND NIGHTS IN THE FOREST. The deft balancing of a seemingly leisurely narrative with an acutely perceptive tale of money and class is masterful. Rules of the Game level s***.

Rest in peace the great, great Frederick Wiseman. A few years ago I had the honor of interviewing him. "I hope 50 years from now, they’ll be interested in the films because it’s a body of films which represent the work of one person exploring contemporary American life."

I didn't write about it but Hlynur Pálmason's Icelandic family drama THE LOVE THAT REMAINS isn't to be missed. A familiar story of family breakup but beautifully specific and full of unforgettable images. Plus a great dog.
