🚨We can measure waves along 10s of km of coastline with incredibly high resolution using seafloor telecommunication cables! We show an application of this for understanding waves in sea ice in our new GRL open-access publication: doi.org/10.1029/2023GL… 1/

Now we cross our fingers for the wind forecast to hold and some waves to rip through this ice later this week

Deploying wave buoys in the coastal Arctic with @jakedavis_sci aka ‘throwing things in the ocean from a helicopter’. Anyone who has worked in this area knows how lucky we were to have not just 1 but 2 beautiful Nov days for flying! @NSF @WHOI

"Hurricane impacts on society are not necessarily correlated to the number of storms. It depends on individual storms and where they occur," said @UW professor of @UWAtmosSci Shuyi Chen of the slower 2022 hurricane season that produced Hurricane Ian. washington.edu/news/2022/09/2…

These observations will help us to understand wave generation inside of hurricanes. Our end goal, together with our project partners, is to improve forecasts for when and where hurricane-generated waves will impact the coasts. nopphurricane.sofarocean.com (2/2)

As part of @thenopp Hurricane Coastal Impacts project, I flew with the @USNRL Scientific Development Squadron (VXS-1) on Monday to deploy 20 wave buoys ahead of Hurricane Ian, including 5 of the microSWIFTs buoys developed by our team at @UW-APL. (1/2)
