Levi’s should have bought Cone Mills in 2017 when it was going belly up. Without the secret ingredient, what are Levi’s jeans, anyway? Here are my thoughts

All of this makes sense. Asking Levi’s to take on a $100 million company that’s losing money is a big one. But the big reason Cone Mills arguably was losing so much money YOY was because Levi’s left them in the 80s and again early 00s. By 2017 Levi’s was only making LVC products in super limited batches at White Oak. This isn’t thus just an indictment of Levi’s decision in 2017 to not “save” the factory, but of their larger cost cutting measures for 4 decades that ultimately choked White Oak out of business. This isn’t unique to Levi’s, but of broader trends across the apparel business of course. Levi’s had their own problems to deal with, but we’re talking about perhaps the MOST American company. If any company could have held themselves to a higher standard in terms of protecting and preserving American manufacturing, and the factory that they worked with for nearly 100 years, it’s Levi’s.

When the plant shut at the end of 2017, it wasn't an independent business that Levi's could just scoop up for a nominal fee. White Oak was owned by the International Textile Group. I think around 2016, ITG was acquired by Platinum Equity, a multi-billion-dollar private equity firm, for an undisclosed sum (industry estimates place the value of the wider group at around $99 million). If Levi's had wanted to buy the plant, the upfront acquisition cost would have been the absolute least of their problems. The real issue was the operating deficit. ITG stated that the facility had been losing money for years. To keep it open, Levi's would have had to subsidise millions of dollars in annual operating losses just to keep the lights on in an oversized, highly inefficient factory. A friggin' money pit. Also, while the "Golden Handshake" is famous, Levi’s only used White Oak denim for its premium Levi's Vintage Clothing (LVC) line and a few select higher-end pieces. The vast majority of Levi's global catalogue was already being woven overseas. Ironically, White Oak’s biggest customer toward the end was actually True Religion. When they went tits up and filed for bankruptcy in 2017, White Oak's order volume completely collapsed.

Launching a shoe company is hard. Doing it with a commitment to only make shoes in America and source entirely US components in nearly impossible. But that’s exactly what Greg at Easymoc did Talked to him about why it’s all worth it at the link in bio

@jakewoolf I believe that some of RL’s watch movements are made by Piaget and Jaeger-LeCoultre. It’s a way to get a watch with a Piaget or JLC manufactured movement for way less, often cased in sterling silver (which is a rare metal for modern Swiss-made timepieces) with stone dials.

I would like to add that even if the cost was let’s say $50 million that Levi’s market cap is $10 billion

I don’t think we give Levi’s enough shit for not buying Cone Mills’ White Oak plant when it was closing in 2017 They had a handshake deal with Levi’s for 100 years and when they were going out of business Levi’s just hit the Seinfeld “that’s a shame” I genuinely wanna know what it would have cost Levi’s to front the money to keep it open and for someone at the company to explain to me why it wasn’t worth it

@magnumdong1992 The 992 is inherently too chunky a shoe IMO. Good color but can’t save the inherent flaw of the style 🤷‍♂️
