I write this with deep sorrow after the tragic events unfolding in #Syria. We’ve entered the familiar cycle where “Syria experts” suddenly find themselves called on to speak about sectarian tensions — as if this is new. Since 2011, academic and policy circles have flooded the scene with analyses framing sectarianism as a root of violence and tension. Some have leaned on instrumentalism, primordialism, or constructivism to explain sectarian dynamics and how these narratives are mobilised from above or below.
But Syria is entering a different phase now — one marked by intertwined political grievances, sharpened by sectarian tensions but not reducible to them. If you’re asked to comment on #Sweida, remember this: sectarianism is a consequence of Syria’s long-failed political process, dating back to the rise of Baathism.
As the country stands at yet another fragile juncture, with violence flaring across different fronts, your analysis matters. Your positionality matters. The space you occupy matters.
For example, just yesterday I was invited on a podcast to speak about what Syrian women can do for Sweida — and how things stand there. I declined and told them to speak with women on the ground. It’s not my place to preach in this moment. You should do the same. If you haven’t studied Sweida or Syria’s tribal dynamics, be careful. Words can — and do — kill in Syria right now.

خبر شخصي: أديت اليوم قسم الجنسية الأمريكية، وصرت سعودي-أمريكي.
يصادف هذا اليوم عيد استقلال أمريكا قبل ٢٤٩ سنة وتأسيسها واحدةً من أقدم الديمقراطيات في العالم.
في سنة ٢٠١٠، استقلت من عملي مهندسا كهربائيا وقررت اكمال دراساتي العليا في نفس التخصص. وصلت أمريكا صيف ٢٠١٠ وكانت خطتي العودة إلى بريدة بأسرع وقت ممكن.
وقتها أقنعني المرحوم يوسف الصمعان أن أغير تخصصي للفلسفة، وأخذت بنصيحته. أذكر أن محمد السيف، شريك يوسف الصمعان في دار جداول، مزح معي مرة على تويتر أني سأتعلق بحب امرأة أمريكية ولن أعود للسعودية. كانت نبوءته نصف صحيحة: فأنا فعلاً تعلقت بحب نورة وتزوجتها وهي سعودية-أمريكية، لكني كنت دائماً على قناعة أني سأعود إلى بريدة.
بدأت قناعتي بالهجرة إلى أمريكا تتشكل ببطء سنة ٢٠١٧ عندما بدى واضحاً لي أن حرية التعبير والبحث والتفكير والمشاركة في الشأن العام أهم عندي من أي شيء آخر. كنت وقتها في السعودية أعمل على رسالة الدكتوراة وتأسيس شركة أبحاث واستطلاعات رأي وفي نفس الوقت أرى كثير من الأصدقاء يعتقلون بسبب كلمة هنا ورأي هناك وتشوه سمعتهم وتختطف أعمارهم.
اتخذت قرار الهجرة في ٢٠١٩. وأنا أسميها (هجرة) لأنها ليست (منفى). فالمنفي يريد العودة ويحن إليها ويسعى لها وعلاقته ببلد المنفى علاقة مؤقتة ومحدودة. أما المهاجر فقد حمل بين ثناياه محبته لوطنه الأول وذكرياته وثقافته ولغته وما تبقى من علاقات وحملها معه إلى وطنه الجديد الذي يريد أن يبقى فيه ويبني جذورا جديدة.
أنا ممتن للأربعين سنة التي منحتني إياها السعودية، فبدونها ما صرت ما أنا عليه الآن، وبريدة بالقلب دائماً. والآن أتطلع للأربعين سنة القادمة - أو أكثر إن الله أحيانا- التي ستمنحني إياها أمريكا، فرغم ما فيها من مشاكل كثيرة ومعقدة إلا أنها قابلة للإصلاح ولا تجرّم من يسعى له.
قد تكون هذه السعادة مبالغ فيها، لكني أتمناها لكل الأشخاص المعذبين بأوطانهم سواء في المنطقة أو هنا. لكل شخص نفي أو هجّر من بلاده ولكل شخص يباد ويطهر عرقيا ولكل شخص مغيّب في السجون ولكل شخص يكابد ضد الترحيل. والله يصلح حال الجميع.

A white man in Phoenix, Arizona, who fancies himself an advocate for Palestine, but slanders Syria any chance he gets, thinks he is educating me about my revolution, my country, Syria, its history and its current status. Sounds pretty “imperialist” and “colonialist” to me.
Another example of when a grifter can not even begin to scratch the surface of what happened in Syria but resort to Iranian, Axis, and Russian propaganda, can not fathom how hard and how long Syrians, inside and out of Syria, have worked for where we are today, a post war country, Assad free, with a real chance to realize our potential for the first time in 50 years, how happy we were in December 8th, can not even begin to comprehend how much we lost, at the hands of that criminal Axis of Resistance and Russia, the horror, pain, devastation, abandonment, and global disinformation campaigns, of which this person brazenly continues to manufacture, occurred, and can’t even begin to hear and have open and curious discussion with the Syrian people but instead speak over them, exhibiting the grossest lack of nuance, analysis, insight…
I could respond to each one of your points, but we did that for 14 years against your types, and at the end, it didn’t matter. And frankly, you display no good intentions.
For the record, your disconnected and black and white narratives are failed. Your recycled rhetoric, which incredibly replicates Israeli rhetoric on Syria, is basic. Your critical thinking is non existent. And as such, you offer little but noise for any cause.

My pointing out the reality of murderous terrorists Al-Qaeda/HTS/ISIS like Al-Jolani has absolutely nothing to do with my long-time support of the Palestinian cause at all - any semi-intelligent, honest person understands these are two separate issues. That said however, your own strange support for Terrorists like Al-Jolani and your cheering the destruction of Syria and the sanctioning of Syria over last 14 years to achieve “regime change” of Assad actually undermines the Palestinian cause, as does your Terrorist hero Al-Jolani’s pledge for ‘nornalisation’ with Zionist Israel (not to mention Jolani giving away Syrian territory; the Golan Heights and Mt Hermon, to Netanyahu and Israel). Quite clearly then, it is your own toxic politics which severely undermines the Palestinian people.
