“No kobo of the Nigerian budget is allocated to bandits or herdsmen. Instead, the Nigerian government is putting pressure on them. That’s why they have to kidnap to finance their war machines.” — Sheikh Gumi

Dead and alive. Former or current. Present or past. Not a single Nigerian former governor, presidential aspirant, or polictian can call out the EFCC for a wrong doing and remain free the next day. I Stan, re-Stan, and AfghaniStan you sir. Nigeria will be OK Insha Allah.

Teargas in a Hospital, a Thoughtless Act. I have just read the recent troubling reports of how the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) allegedly stormed the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital in a bid to arrest Professor Eyo Ekpe, a professor of cardiothoracic surgery and deputy chairman of the hospital’s medical advisory committee. While I understand and respect the fact that the EFCC, and indeed, all other government agencies have their constitutional rights to do their jobs without interference, the manner in which some of these jobs are carried out is often deeply troubling. Reportedly, the EFCC operatives who stormed the hospital shot some teargas canisters within the hospital premises which sent medical staff and patients running for safety. This thoughtless act greatly compromised the general safety in the hospital environment and further jeopardised the health of the medical personnel and the sick people in the hospital. I have always said that the most fundamental intangible asset upon which any nation functions effectively is the rule of law and order. The disorderliness allegedly demonstrated by the EFCC operatives at the hospital must not be encouraged. Nothing justifies the use of teargas canisters in a fragile hospital environment. Do we not realise that our hospitals are part of our most critical contributors to development? We must also learn to respect the lives and dignity of our citizens. If a Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery is arrested in such a demeaning manner in a hospital environment, what signals are we sending to other medical professionals working hard to keep our health sector afloat? It is reported that Nigeria has only 80 cardiothoracic surgeons serving its 230 million people, and the Prof Eyo Ekpe is the only one in Akwa Ibom State. Let us learn to do better. Let us condemn and eschew the rascality and disorderliness that have continued to characterise some of our public offices and bring in civility in the discharge of our duties. A New Nigeria is POssible. -PO

Do you know that you’ve been lied to that the Nigerian Constitution is a secular Constitution. Well, it’s not, because it contains 73 mentions of SHARIA, 28 mentions of Islam & 10 mentions of Muslim but ZERO mention of CHRISTIAN. Is this not enough to want a separate State? Let’s talk about it, without fear or favor.

Today, Thursday 7th May, I continued with my commitment to supporting critical areas of development—education, healthcare, and helping people out of poverty—with a visit to the University of the Niger, Umunya, Anambra State. The university, which was established just five years ago, has continued to make remarkable progress, and I have made it a point to visit every year to support the good work being done there. My last visit to this institution was at its teaching hospital in Ogidi. Today, I encouraged the students to remain dedicated to their studies, reminding them that the world today is driven by knowledge, and the future of Nigeria rests in the hands of young people like them. In support of scholarships and educational development, I made a donation of 25 million naira for the development of the institution. I sincerely commend the Diocese on the Niger, for their foresight, vision, and steadfast commitment to educational and institutional growth. I also wish to express my appreciation to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, for his evident dedication to education. His commitment is reflected in the many schools and institutions he continues to support in their growth and strengthening. I remain fully committed to the growth of education and the development of students in our country because no nation can rise beyond the strength of its education and human capital. A New Nigeria is POssible. -PO

HbA1c is the standard long-term marker of blood sugar control in diabetes. But this measurement depends on one critical assumption: that red blood cells are living a normal lifespan of about 90–120 days. When that assumption breaks down, HbA1c either falsely reassures or falsely alarms. 🔴Conditions That Give a FALSELY LOW HbA1c (Blood sugar is worse than HbA1c suggests) 1. Haemolytic Anaemias — Red blood cells are destroyed prematurely (sickle cell disease, thalassaemia, autoimmune haemolytic anaemia, G6PD deficiency). Younger red cells have had less time to accumulate glucose coating, so HbA1c appears deceptively low. The ADA (American Diabetes Association) Standards of Care 2024 explicitly flags haemolytic conditions as a major source of HbA1c unreliability. 2. Iron Deficiency Anaemia (treated) — When iron deficiency is corrected and new red cells flood the bloodstream, the HbA1c can transiently fall even if sugars are unchanged. 3. Acute or Chronic Blood Loss — Heavy bleeding or frequent blood draws (e.g., in dialysis patients or critically ill patients) constantly replenish the circulation with fresh red cells, lowering HbA1c artifactually. 4. Erythropoietin Therapy / Blood Transfusions — EPO stimulates new red cell production; transfusions introduce donor cells. Both dilute the older glycated pool, pulling HbA1c down. The KDIGO 2024 CKD guidelines specifically caution against relying on HbA1c in dialysis and CKD patients receiving EPO or transfusions. 5. Haemoglobin Variants — Structural variants (HbS, HbC, HbE, HbD) interfere with several HbA1c assay methods, either falsely lowering or raising the result depending on the assay platform used. The IFCC (International Federation of Clinical Chemistry) and the ADA both recommend alternative monitoring methods when haemoglobin variants are present. 🔴Conditions That Give a FALSELY HIGH HbA1c (Blood sugar appears worse than it really is) 1. Iron Deficiency Anaemia (untreated) — This is the flip side: iron-deficient red cells live longer than normal, accumulating more glucose coating over time. Multiple studies and ADA guidance note this spurious elevation. Treating the anaemia can drop HbA1c by 1–2% with no real change in glucose. 2. Vitamin B12 / Folate Deficiency — These deficiencies slow red cell turnover and artificially prolong their lifespan, raising HbA1c. 3. Splenectomy — The spleen normally culls ageing red cells. After surgical removal of the spleen, old cells persist longer, accumulating more glycation and inflating HbA1c. 4. Aplastic Anaemia — Bone marrow failure leads to fewer new cells being produced, so the existing cells age longer and carry more glucose coating.
Dr. AK 🇮🇳@docakx

Stop wasting money by doing HbA1c in a diabetic patient with CKD and on erythropoetin therapy.

Workers Are the Backbone of Every Nation On this Workers’ Day, I warmly salute workers across the world, especially Nigerian workers whose daily sacrifices continue to sustain our families, communities, institutions, and national economy, even in the face of severe hardship and uncertainty. It is deeply painful that those who wake up every day to teach, heal, build, farm, produce, transport, protect, and serve our nation are still denied the dignity and fair reward their labour deserves. In today’s Nigeria, the minimum wage can no longer guarantee even the most modest standard of living, as inflation, rising food prices, transportation costs, and economic hardship continue to erode the value of honest work. No nation can truly develop beyond the strength, productivity, and wellbeing of its workforce. The progress of any society rests on the quality of its human capital, the skill of its people, and the commitment of its workers. When workers suffer, the nation suffers. When workers are empowered, the nation prospers. But beyond their labour, workers also possess another powerful tool, their voice and their vote. Through democratic participation, they have the power to shape governance and determine the future direction of the nation. I therefore urge Nigerian workers to recognise the strength they hold collectively. They owe it to themselves, their children, and future generations to support and demand leadership built on competence, character, capacity, credibility, and compassion. By refusing to reward failure, corruption, ethnic division, and bad governance, they can help build a nation where hard work is respected and rewarded with dignity. A productive nation must be built on justice, fairness, and respect for labour. That is the Nigeria we must work together to achieve. With the support and participation of Nigerian workers, a New Nigeria is POssible. -PO
