When I joined @postlocal in 2020, we had a staff of between 80 and 90 people. Now, we’re hovering at about 40. And yet, we still break news of national/int’l import. We hold power accountable. Our work changes lives. The nation’s capital needs a hometown newspaper. #SaveThePost

The problem, as always, is scale. How do you support a huge, ambitious newsroom that tries to appeal to every kind of reader if the revenue isn’t there? It turns out, you can’t. But the Post has also backed away from local coverage so it’s hard to say exactly what it intends to be now. 2/2

I witnessed the decline of the Chicago Tribune and LA Times as they got sucked into the regional paper death spiral. The Post tried to break free of that and establish itself as a true national/international brand. It didn’t reach that so now comes the big retrenchment. It’s tough to watch. 1/2
