A forgotten woman changed *your* life with a dessert🍮🧫🦠 You have (likely) never heard of her. That's why this story is important. That's why we *need* your help. We are creating a graphic novel! Please support us on Patreon, if you can 👇🏽 patreon.com/corradonai

@markowenmartin Just reading Ed Yong's "l Contain Multitudes" and there's quite some references to her research!

When I feel low, I remind myself of how kind and inclusive microbiology has been to me. I have become friends with some remarkable minds, like the irreplaceable force of symbiotic nature named Margaret McFall-Ngai. So much smarter than I will ever be, but so kind and supportive

One of my favorite histories we've published. I never appreciated just how crucial agar was during WWII. The British and Japanese mobilized troops to hunt for red algae to isolate agar, as it was needed to manufacture penicillin for soldiers. Check out the full essay 🔻
Asimov Press@AsimovPress

NEW: Agar is a ubiquitous part of research labs, used to grow microbes to make vaccines & antibiotics. The person who first discovered its "superior features" for microbiology was Fanny Hesse, a “German housewife” whose contributions to science have mostly been forgotten.

I truly have been obsessed by tardigrades for many years. I found a felted sculptor years ago who created tardigrades. I lost one, but still have this one, "Blue Starri Tardi," named by Jennifer Gardy years ago. I'm on the lookout for more!

You are the Deus Ex Machina of this story "The Dessert that Changed the World" Because only readers can help bring back Fanny Angelina Hesse's lost memory (at least that's my hope!) patreon.com/posts/you-are-…

@GermJuggler 🤣 Dave, have you come across some with agar? I never have in Indonesia but heard about an agar-based coffee beverage in Japan

Three words to describe our story! The Dessert that Changed the World is a story that pays tribute to the invisible. It tells of why growing microbes is important for science & medicine... and of the forgotten woman who made it possible. patreon.com/posts/anticlim…
