JUST OUT: Trump has raised with SecState Rubio and other top aides the possibility of withdrawing from NATO if allies don’t help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. officials said. He has discussed leaving NATO, or at least potentially finding ways to weaken the U.S. commitment.

One of the greatest failures of this war has been the absolute devastation of American bases in the Gulf by Iran. 13 bases were left uninhabitable and several more were damaged. It has now been revealed that the issue of the vulnerability of these bases had been raised repeatedly in the past and ignored: 1) Frank McKenzie who led Central Command raised it during the first Trump term. Those who followed him warned Biden and Trump repeatedly. 2) They proposed to build a network of bases further west, deeper inside Saudi Arabia. They argued that bases further west in Saudi Arabia would have been significantly farther and fewer Iranian missiles and drones could actually reach them, because range is a limiting factor even for Iran's arsenal. Those that could reach would arrive with less fuel, potentially less accuracy, and less payload. Warning times would increase, giving defenders more time to respond and aircraft more time to scramble or shelter 3) The Biden administration was prioritizing the Pacific/China competition and didn't want a heavier Middle East footprint. The Trump administration, despite initiating this war, also didn't pursue the western basing network even though they had time to prepare. 4) Satellite photos of Prince Sultan throughout March show the E-3 parked in the same location on multiple days before it was struck. That's not a minor operational lapse — that's a fundamental violation of basic force protection principles during an active conflict with a adversary that has demonstrated both the will and capability to strike that exact base. An E-3 AWACS is not a fighter jet. It's an enormous, slow, distinctive aircraft that can't hide easily. Everyone in the military knows it's a high-value target. The entire Iranian military knows it's a high-value target. 5) The bases were not properly hardened either. Hegseth claimed before the war started that the military had taken steps to "fortify and disperse forces" and that commanders were working to avoid predictable patterns. The satellite imagery directly contradicts this. The E-3 was parked in the same spot on multiple days throughout March, which is about as predictable a pattern as you can have. This was a foreseeable vulnerability was flagged repeatedly, ignored by two successive administrations for bureaucratic and strategic reasons, and is now being paid for in damaged aircraft and wounded troops during an active war.
