Cantalloc Aqueducts are one of most outstanding hydraulic engineering works in the world, built in the middle of the desert by Nazca culture (200-700 AD). They are located 4km north from Nazca, in the valleys of Nazca, Taruga and Las Trancas, Peru 🇵🇪 Of the 46 underground aqueducts found, 32 are still in operation today, something that began in the pre-Inca period 1500 years ago. The holes in the ground are designed to allow wind to blow into a series of underground canals, in which water from underground aquifers flows. The canals take the water to where it is needed. The aqueducts ensured the supply of water to the city of Nazca and the surrounding fields, allowing the cultivation of cotton, beans, potatoes and other crops in an arid region. Cantalloc aqueducts comprehends a system of 35 aqueducts called “Puquios”, which are ventilation shafts with a spiral shape used for cleaning, conservation and water collection. These aqueducts characterized by their spiral shape and run several kilometers below the surface to depths of up to 12 meters. They were made up of materials such as flagstones and huarango trunks – a tree that grows in this arid lands recognized by its resistance to water erosion. These are others of the aqueducts found within the Nazca region, known by its different designs and purpose: Bisambra, Achaco, La Gobernadora, Aja, Curve, Orcona, Santo Cristo, El Pino, El Pampon, and Ocongalla. Thanks to their technological knowledge, ancient inhabitants of Nazca managed to capture groundwater to irrigate the dry areas and combat the prolonged droughts. Nowadays, some of these aqueducts are used by local farmers for the sowing of corn, cotton, beans and potatoes. It is a unique irrigation system in Peru and perhaps in the world. #archaeohistories
