The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is lighting up! Seismicity started on Monday near the Charlie-Gibbs transform, with an M5.8 normal faulting event. Has been migrating south at ~1 km/hr since then. A once-in-50-yr dike intrusion event? (EQs relocation courtesy of G. Ekstrom @LamontEarth) 🌋

Beyond the implications for Earth’s physiography, our results raise a bunch of new questions, for example on how shallow reverse quakes nucleate in a bending plate that’s (probably) full of fluids… so stay tuned for follow-up work!

What’s neat is that the 2022 swarm revealed a mechanism that leaves a significant mark on the fabric of the ocean floor: Mid-ocean ridges operate much like escalators, shaping step-like hills that first grow, then partially close as they move off-axis.
