This is Margaret Hamilton, the brilliant computer scientist who led the MIT team that wrote the onboard flight software for NASA's Apollo program. She helped land humans on the Moon with code she and her team hand-wrote! In this photo, she is inside the full-scale Apollo command module simulator, reaching up to work on the controls and test software that she created. A fun fact: She once brought her young daughter, Lauren, into the lab. Lauren started mashing keys on the simulator and completely crashed it by triggering a pre-launch sequence while the simulator was already mid-flight. Margaret wanted to add error-prevention code to stop this from happening, but the upper echelon at NASA said "no" because "astronauts are highly trained and don't make mistakes." Later on, during the Apollo 8 mission, an astronaut made the exact same mistake that Lauren did! Ooopsies! Margaret's team had to scramble to fit the issue in real-time.
