Recently, there was a big debate in Sarawak about whether a third-generation Chinese Sarawakian should be bumiputra. On social media, many people discussed it, but most missed the main point. A lot of people think bumiputra status is written in the Federal Constitution. It is not. Bumiputra is just an administrative term used to classify certain segment of the population to grant them certain benefits, mostly educational and economic benefits. It is a political decision whether someone gets bumiputra status or not. Another common mistake is thinking bumiputra and indigenous mean the same thing. Legally, they are different. But most Malaysians believe they are the same. In Sabah, Sino-Kadazan were granted bumiputra status from day one, and in Sarawak Sino-Native were granted bumiputra status based on application from November 2023 onwards. I think having this debate is good because it can educate the public. It will reveal the how people really think and the level of understanding. Of course, I know that no politician from Peninsular Malaysia would dare say something like what Larry Sng said — the current political climate is too toxic for that.
