@NintyPrime @Alize_187 @NameOrSummin Yeah, for jobs as a paid hourly employee, I've almost always made $0.25 to $0.50/hour above minimum wage. As a writer for various game sites, I've worked for less than that because independent contractors don't have to earn minimum wage. But those jobs aren't hiring now, anyway.

@jasonventer @Alize_187 @NameOrSummin You're right, I forgot that the $15 increase never passed federally. That said, yes my state is Wisconsin, it's $7.25, but realistically it's more like $9 since that's the lowest job I can see available that's hiring.

It's weird watching the "drop the price" parade happen to Switch 2 over the last 9 months, but there is no widespread campaign over this. And yeah we all know the price increases are not entirely any one company's fault. But, a lot of noise over $450 that isn't being made over anything else at the same level.

@NintyPrime @Alize_187 @NameOrSummin The federal minimum wage here in the US is $7.25, but states typically have a higher wage in place that applies locally. They have to meet or exceed the federal minimum wage. It sounds like you live in one of the few states that doesn't exceed it. That's usually the Midwest-ish.

I don't know how their country works - but you can maybe look at the U.S. as an example. so the Federal mandated minimum wage is $15 per hour - that is not enforced locally as it doesn't supersede local state laws. My state is still $7.25 per hour and while it's pretty hard to find even a part time job that pays THAT low anymore, it's not hard to find jobs still paying $9 per hour, which is barely - and I mean barely - livable for a single adult. There may be something like this in NZ - where individual areas have their own laws that the federal law doesn't override.

@Alize_187 @NameOrSummin @NintyPrime You're right. I'm going by the numbers available online, which only factor in health care, housing costs, typical wage, and the cost of groceries in New Zealand versus the US. By just those metrics, New Zealanders have a SUBSTANTIAL advantage. Costs have soared here too.

@Alize_187 @NameOrSummin @NintyPrime 1 NZD is currently worth 0.58 of 1 USD. I pay roughly $350/week USD for one of the cheapest places in a small town, which is a 2-bedroom apartment with no garage. For a 3-bedroom with garage, rent starts at $525-$600 USD ($900 to $1000 NZD). Exchange rates matter in all things.

@NameOrSummin @Alize_187 @NintyPrime Federal minimum wage in the US is $7.25 (realistic average across states: $15). National NZ minimum wage is $23.95/hour. Low end rentals in the US are around $1,550/month, versus $1800 NZD. New Zealand residents are getting a SWEET deal on the Switch 2! They just don't know it.

@Alize_187 @NintyPrime That's like a 13% increase for the American price, and like a 10% from the International version of the Japanese price. That doesn't sound terrible, based on what the real price is. Is this the official price that also shows on the Nintendo site, or are they independent?

@NintyPrime Here's my problem: I like too many types of game. No one is supposed to care about EVERY release, and yet there's nothing on that list that I'm not looking forward to playing. I won't play it all, because I don't have the money. But every one of those games does appeal to me.

Nintendo as a console maker is basically the literal only platform holder you can even have this level of discussion and debate about publishing a game literally every single month. Utter insanity. @NintyPrime As an aside, fewer reviews isn't necessarily the reason for the higher score. Scores are easier to impact when fewer numbers contribute to the average, and that can work both for and against a game. The real reason is likely the Nintendo-focused outlets being suitably impressed.

The Switch 2 version being higher rated than everything else feels like a trend so far this year. Pragmata is another banger from Capcom.

Sony probably waited to raise the price of the various PS5 SKUs until April 2 so we would all know it wasn't a joke. And so the worst of the bad PR would hit on just one day, not two.

@NintyPrime It's bizarre. People have been dreaming of an OoT update in HD for what, 10 years? And just as it looks like it might happen, everyone's swooping in to say "Meh" and ask for another port of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess instead. Are they determined to be disappointed or what?

BTW, NTH's rumors today, have been corroborated by multiple outlets. The cat is out of the bag. So question is, what do you think of this "known" lineup for Switch 2 in 2026 altogether (obviously, without knowing how good the unannounced and released games are yet)? - Mario Tennis Fever - Pokopia - Mario Wonder Switch 2 Edition - Yoshi & The Mysterious Book - Star Fox - Splatoon Raiders - Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave - Nintendo Switch Sports (2 or Switch 2 Edition) - Pikmin 4 Switch 2 Edition - The Duskbloods - Ocarina of Time Remake

@NintyPrime I like it fine. It's a good way to respond the people who voiced that criticism in the past and meant it. However, it's not a good way to address the people who just always want games to be cheaper, without stopping to consider how much games cost to make. They'll never be happy.

Nintendo is doing the thing (variable pricing) in a way people have said they wanted (cheaper digital games). $69.99 for Yoshi physically, $59.99 digitally. Reason? Rising cost of physical, basically. Do you like the change?
Nintendeal@Nintendeal

Beginning in May 2026, and starting with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, new Nintendo published digital titles exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 will have an MSRP that is different from physical versions. nintendo.com/us/whatsnew/ab…

@NintyPrime I know I want it! But I also want Black Desert, which isn't rated nearly as well and may give me many dozens of hours of enjoyment. Besides that, I have a backlog. When I was a kid, I never imagined still being a gamer almost 40 years later would be difficult in quite this way.

I think I might start predicting that Grand Theft Auto VI will arrive on Switch 2. Because if I'm wrong, I'll get extra views but no one will remember it later. If I'm right, I can pretend I had insider knowledge and turn myself into a major influencer. What's the down side?

@Stealth40k Amusingly, there are still people angry with "greedy" Nintendo for already releasing a Switch 2 when they only just bought the original Switch, as if it's Nintendo's fault they waited 8 or more years before finally buying that system. I'd be happy with new hardware every 6 years.

The Nintendo Switch released 9 years ago! It's Nintendo's best selling system ever and in my opinion has the best library of games any Nintendo system has ever had.

@NintyPrime To answer the question more directly, I still have fun when I play the occasional new release. But that new release will get a lot of hate from people in one of the two groups mentioned. They make it hard to share any joy I feel as I have a good time playing anything new at all.

@NintyPrime I suspect the current state, with folks complaining bitterly about everything game developers/publishers do, is the result of two things: 1) people who used to enjoy the medium have "outgrown" it and don't want to admit it to themselves; 2) rage bait gets the easiest engagement.

Saw the latest Game Theory video about the console wars, but what interested me most were the comments. Many, and I mean MANY people, talking about how it's changed to player vs company and that the gaming industry is up in flames, etc etc. Real question time: Let's set aside industry layoffs, in fact let's set aside all of the business side of gaming in general as that's a for profit, corporate structure that's existed in many different forms the last 40 years regardless of public perception. Speaking strictly as gamers: Are you still gaming today and happy with the games you play? Whether modern, retro, indie, AAA, first party, third party, phone games, console, PC, none of that matters. Just, are you still enjoying this medium and having a good time? I ask because when I see all these "negative" comments, what I don't see are people talking about actually playing games. So, are you still having a damn good time, or no?

@alexm6174 @NintyPrime A fair number of them also comment on how greedy/stupid Nintendo is for not putting its games on PC and other consoles. Some "fans" are just willfully ignorant. I worry about their worldview, even beyond gaming, if their Nintendo views reflect their overall intelligence.

@NintyPrime People were confused and complaining about the fact that you needed to buy an SNES to play the new Super Mario World game. That was back in 1990... It baffles me that, 35 years later, people still don't seem to understand the idea of new games being exclusive to new hardware

Internet: “switch 2 has no new exclusive games” Pokemon: “announces new switch 2 exclusive that’s a year or more out from launching” Internet: “why do I have to pay $450 to play Pokemon. Should be on switch 1!” Like clockwork. lol

@NintyPrime To me, the PS5 version looks better in all four examples. Brighter. Sharper. And it runs at 60fps, which people who can see the difference (I can't, except side-by-side) love. But that misses the point. A portable Nintendo platform coming this close to PS5 is indeed impressive.

Indeed. It appears to visually be an impressive port. They even said handheld was shocking because Handheld looks and feels so great to play, then you find out before DLSS the resolution is 360p and you can't really believe it at all, because DLSS is doing such a fantastic job taking that to 1080p. That's the "magic" people talked about with DLSS. That said, sounds like it could have used an additional 30fps locked mode.
Kabi@KirPinkFury

Digital Foundry said that Resident Evil Requiem looks virtually the same between PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Differences are the hair strands, Ray Tracing (not present on Switch 2), and the resolution of some frames. youtu.be/S1N-HoqU_sQ?si…
