🚩 New @_UKCoaching Journal Article 🚩 Directing our intentions – using the explore-execute taxonomy to shape athlete interactions One of the hardest parts of coaching is knowing whether skill learning is actually happening. Because adaptation unfolds over time, not within a single session, it can be difficult to judge progress. Yet “session flow” or short-term improvement can easily trick us into thinking athletes are developing. Building on our chapter in Sport Skill Acquisition, this paper with Michael Ashford outlines an evidence-informed framework, developed through our coaching and coach development, to help coaches plan, monitor, and reflect with greater intent. The Explore–Execute Taxonomy supports coaches to be deliberate about athlete–activity interactions and to monitor, in action, whether the challenge point aligns with their intentions.
