@DonaldClark @Steve_R_Price I’d be happy to show you thousands of papers that I’ve grade over the past 10+ years. Also, it’s logical. Highly likely that a free service is used more than a pay service.
English

@mavisclare @Steve_R_Price As opposed to your "surely there's something better to do than ragebait" i.e. being ad hominem.
English

@DonaldClark @Steve_R_Price I would suggest that perhaps this distinction between abuse & debate is a bit nebulous, given some of the assumptions here x.com/DonaldClark/st…

@capinsurrep @moorehn It's a peculiarly US phenomenon and, having attended both a US and UK University, I'm not convinced it is at all 'fundamental'. These skills should be picked up in high school. There's a sort of traditional conformity I find in this approach, a straightjacketing of expression.
English

@Smuckerdoodle6 @Steve_R_Price Yourself. You haven't inspired them to write a singke word? I'd be looking at my behaviour as an adult.
English

@DonaldClark @Steve_R_Price Blaming students who use AI to cheat after I’ve told them not to and offered my help if they feel overwhelmed or stuck or completely lost or just want to talk seems pretty reasonable to me. Who else should I blame?
English

@Smuckerdoodle6 @Steve_R_Price I wouldn't let dogmatic people who blame students near teaching. Do you never think why they do this? Or how you can change their behaviour?
English

@DonaldClark @Steve_R_Price And, importantly, note that I never said ALL of my students cheat. I said they don’t use AI to “support” their writing. The ones who use it use it to cheat. That has nothing to do with my teaching and everything to do with their lack of respect for themselves & what they can do.

Unironically: finally someone has the guts to say it. One day we will look at cars the same way we look at lead water pipes. Number two worst technology after AI.

First Draft. Have just bound the manuscript of my forthcoming book ‘The Madness of Cars’
English

@Steve_R_Price @mavisclare I agree. Shortcuts have been enticing for as long as formal learning has existed and for centuries before AI. My problem is with those who throw their hands in air, and blame students. Rather than find a solution, they throw out abuse.
English

@DonaldClark @mavisclare As much as writing would be directly taught, it would be more embedded in your tutorials? The US system is more about efficiency--so, more students in seats, & writing taught in some classes and assumed taught in others. AI as a shortcut can be enticing in that efficiency model.

Yann LeCun says LLMs are strongest in domains where language itself is the substrate of reasoning, like math and code
They can solve problems, prove theorems, and write programs — but they are not creative mathematicians, software architects, or computer scientists
"their role is to help humans build"
English

@dowellml I especially appreciate the thoughts on current issues and challenges in AI by those people who have no expertise in AI.
English

@C_Hendrick Almost all of these apps have content written by teachers. That's where the problem really lies.
English

@DonaldClark @Steve_R_Price Have you ever met a student? This isn’t how they are using it.
English

@Smuckerdoodle6 @Steve_R_Price You either have a low opinion of alll students or so bad a teacher they don't respect you. Blaming students is not a strategy.
English

@DonaldClark @Steve_R_Price Are you trying to tell me, a freshman comp prof, that my students use AI to “support” their writing instead of to DO their writing?
This has to be satire. It’s that disconnected from reality.
English

@DonaldClark @Steve_R_Price More students now using AI as a one-shot “purchase” than ever used essay mills. What you describe should be happening but largely isn’t.
English

@mavisclare @Steve_R_Price Some of us engage in debate not abuse. Writing is not normally taught in UK Universities. I find a Professor of writihg a rather odd phenomenon.
English

@DonaldClark @Steve_R_Price Didn't you also come on here saying writing classes shouldn't even be a thing? I hope this is all a bit. But even so, surely there's something better to do than ragebait people who actually teach writing
English

@cannibality @Steve_R_Price Educator activist, in others words - not actually a professional teacher
English

@DonaldClark @Steve_R_Price completely naive, totally disconnected from the reality educators are seeing. this is not at all how students are using LLMs.
English

@DonaldClark @Steve_R_Price How much of your books were written by you?
English

@tammy_schoen @Steve_R_Price Don't assume you know what I do. AI tutors offer good pedagogy, desirable edifficulty, as do good teachers.
English

@DonaldClark @Steve_R_Price The word that stands out here is Support. The reality is the students are doing input/output. You have offered an off ramp from thinking/creating/analyzing/synthesizing…all skills that will be lost or never even gained when subbing AI for learning
English

@Tejanarusa @dorhamidbar @Steve_R_Price You’re a washed out lawyer mate. Least
Liked profession on the planet
English

@dorhamidbar @DonaldClark @Steve_R_Price He does. His bio: CEO Of a company making "AI for Learning" products. LOL

Clever experiment that shamed AI critics. Post real art, say it's AI, get a pile on...
Jediwolf@Jediwolf
What happens when you post a real Monet and say it’s AI? The coolest art social experiment I’ve seen in a while. Thank you @SHL0MS
