Fabric has CICD built in, but try a real schema change (drop a column, shorten one, remove a table with data), and the deployment fails. Fabric blocks it, and you're stuck. My new post shows a simple way to deploy databases in Fabric: SqlPackage and Azure DevOps. A build pipeline extracts the schema to a DACPAC, a release pipeline ships it through QA and Production, and you get the publish switches Fabric won't give you. The best part: it works the same for Fabric SQL and Azure SQL. Only the connection string changes. A QA deploy ran in about 3 minutes, wrapped in a transaction so it rolls back if anything breaks. 🚀 I just finished testing Microsoft's new Automatic Index Compaction feature in Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and Microsoft Fabric SQL Database. For years, DBAs have focused on fragmentation and scheduled index rebuilds, reorganizations, and maintenance windows. But with modern flash storage, page density is often the metric that matters most for I/O performance. In my test: ✅ Starting state • 99.5% page density • 962 pages • 25 logical reads ✅ After workload churn • 52.7% page density • 4,394 pages • 1,610 logical reads ✅ After Automatic Index Compaction • 96.1% page density • 1,065 pages • 35 logical reads That's roughly a 98% reduction in logical reads without running a rebuild, reorganize, or maintenance job. The most interesting part? I turned on the feature with a single line of T-SQL and simply waited while the engine compacted partially filled pages in the background.
