My AI shot gives me bouncier hair, but takes away a good bit of my chest - I'm far girthier IRL

@vixsheikh If someone opens your newsletter, they've opened it. And if they haven't, they haven't. So, it's not a constraint on whether your content is being read. It's a constraint on reporting, which is a fair criticism.

@JayCoDon But I’m curious if you see an alternative here? The Gmail constraint is real afaik.

@JayCoDon Shouldn’t the concern here be directed to the platform not Substack?

@duffycommaryan I see the vision as well and at this stage, they’re definitely the friendlier of most platforms. But if someone is an app follower and not an email follower and you leave SS, AFAIK, you can’t take those app followers with you. It’s an incremental cage.

Totally hear you. Default skeptical is the right way to look at any platform! But I give Substack a lot of credit for being one of the first to give users real audience portability. Even tho it’s evolved into a semi-walled garden over time, I think there’s a lot of value behind those walls for a lot of people. I see the vision.

Creators and publishers should show up wherever their audience is. But I take issue with this: "On Substack, you have a direct line to subscribers, on a platform whose business model only works when yours does." There has never been a platform in the world that didn't then rewrite the rules on the creator who built their audience on their app.

I interpret his post as making the same point you are: the “truth” is at the middle and bottom of the funnel. Either way, I think it’s plausible that AI could seriously disintermediate email the same way it’s doing to search. So the argument for Substack and/or other platforms as a hedge makes sense to me (in theory). Idk that I believe AI will actually be that disruptive…email feels pretty untouchable! But it’s on the table at least.

@AdamSinger I'm taking issue with this: "On Substack, you have a direct line to subscribers, on a platform whose business model only works when yours does." That's not a direct line to subscribers. That's a direct line to their users on their app until they change the rules.

Spoke with @rafat about what happens to conferences when you can take everything a particular speaker has said, upload it to AI, and ask it questions. Why attend a conference anymore? Full episode in the replies.
