@davesumnersmith It's a free country. Isn't it?! The employer should do what he/she thinks best, but for me, they'd be out the door the same day.

@fatsculler It’s a regatta not a s0dding head race. (Take note Dorney 1,2,3). Hey, how about rowing-cross? 1k slalom, round a buoy. First crew’s boat back on rack wins.

Back of the fag packet musings… #rowing format needs an overhaul. I would scrap repechages run all events as a Time Trial with top 12 through to semis (or top 6 to A Final for 8’s). I’d also do away with any race below B final and rank those crews based on TT result

@TimesRadio If you want to replace the Tories, first thing you do is kill the Tories. Take their space and then turn your fire on Labour at the next election. This is the Reform plan. The fewer Tories in the next parliament the better for them.

“Reform don’t care what they chuck out there because they know very well they’re not likely to be in government.” Iain Duncan Smith says he “couldn’t care less” if the Conservative campaign is “in trouble” for the general election. Listen: shorturl.at/iUwl0

@edwinhayward I’d love to see the Tories wiped out but it would create a political vacuum. Who is more likely to fill it? Sure the LibDems might become the official opposition but my worry is in the country it will be Reform. Thats their plan.

Two futures: Labour in Government. Tories in Opposition. 5 years of hate on steroids, endless culture wars & immigrant-bashing. OR Labour in Government, LibDems in Opposition. Tories powerless & voiceless on the back benches. If the Tories come third, it changes everything. Here's why: Coming second would let the Tories rebuild as the official Opposition and continue to push their Hate agenda. But coming third should finish them. It might take time, but they'd be walking dead. Second place confers substantial benefits: - 6 questions at PMQs - Guaranteed regular media coverage from the BBC and other outlets with "due impartiality" requirements - 17 Opposition Days to set the agenda and hold votes - Extra Short Money (almost £1 million) - First right to reply to King's Speech and Budget - More media coverage in debates - Privy council membership for senior figures - Office of the Leader of the Opposition with extra resources Here's the sting in the tail: These benefits vanish if you're not second. You're condemned to obscurity. 2 questions at PMQs, that's your lot. There's no bronze medal in politics! Faced with irrelevance, the Tories won't be able to rebuild. Donors & supporters will abandon them. Why would they stick around when the Tories have no influence and precious little voice? There's another potential prize on offer too: If the LibDems become the Opposition (other than the Tories, they're the only party with even a sniff of a chance of doing so) the conspiracy of silence between the Tories and Labour over Brexit will be broken. It will be in their interest for the LibDems to attack Labour on Brexit, backed by strong public sentiment. And that means sidelined topics would be back on the table: Single Market membership, rejoining the Customs Union, even EU membership. Put plainly: Nothing will advance the cause of Rejoin more than knocking Tories out of second place NOW. But pragmatism is vital to make it happen: Park your feelings at the door. Angry? Jaded? Bitter? Frustrated? Fed up with politics? Take a deep deep breath and focus on the bigger picture. This isn't about Labour or the LibDems. It really isn't. They're just stepping stones along the way. The huge prize is ending the Tories as a viable political force. And we're never going to get the chance to do so again. Our current situation benefits from a perfect storm: - Widespread fury at 14 years of Tory misrule - Endless examples of mismanagement (PPE, Brexit, PartyGate, etc.) - Reform UK splitting the right-wing vote - Resurgent LibDems There's one factor even more important than any of the above: The Tories are running the worst election campaign ever. Just astonishingly terrible. Had they got their act together, they might still be competitive. But instead it's been gaffe after gaffe after gaffe. D-Day, Sky TV, election betting, you name it. Their calamitous campaign is breaking through even to people who don't regularly engage with politics, or follow the news at all. So we have 5 separate factors, all combining to make the Tories uniquely vulnerable, in a way they've never been before or will be again. And that screams opportunity: To kick the Tories into third, vote tactically for whichever party is best placed to defeat them in YOUR constituency. An election is won locally, regardless of national polls. Focus on the situation in your area. For up-to-date tactical voting advice, check: stopthetories.vote Compare advice from different tactical voting sites at: inglesp.github.io/apogee/tactica… Always keep your eyes on the prize. Vote tactically, and encourage others to do the same. Tomorrow really doesn't have to be like today. But only if you play your part, and everyone else does too.

'Do you genuinely think Vladimir Putin is sitting there wanting Sir Keir Starmer to win this election?' @RishiSunak: 'Yeah, I worry about our nation's security under Keir Starmer and a Labour government. We are investing more in our defence... Starmer's not going to do that'

@edwinhayward Indeed, it's worse here. RN is sitting on around 35% support. With FPTP in the UK, 35% can get you a majority govt. Right now, I'd agree Reform have a potential ceiling of 20-25% but in 5 years time, when the Tories have been absorbed, and Labour are an unpopular goverment....

There is a ceiling for the hate stew Reform are peddling. Say it's 20% of the population, 25% absolute max. (A lot of that would overlap with the Tory voter base.) If we had PR, they'd be a permanent thorn in Parliament's side, but they and the Tories would never be in power.

BREAKING: The Gambling Commission is asking the betting companies to supply information on whether other parliamentary candidates have placed bets - as Kevin Craig did - on losing in their respective seats in the forthcoming election, or placed bets where there is an appearance of exploiting privileged or inside information. It raises the likelihood of more embarrassing disclosures by candidates and their parties in the coming days before the election. How many other candidates will be disowned by the Tories and Labour before 4 July?
