@QuetzalPhoenix Canada also purged its national anthem of God and anything "gendered." It's incredible.

@hackerjay @leeteehee @yfcherries I’m salaried and get paid monthly, the same every month. My annual income is 13.95 months of pay. What should I report as my biweekly income? I think the point is not everywhere operates as US, Canada, etc — in fact, it seems most don’t!

@leeteehee @yfcherries I’m salaried, but I get paid every other Friday. That means some months I get three paychecks and make 33% more than other months. What should I report as my monthly pay?

@BrilliantMaps Well the whole territory has a population of 42K, while the riding average is 121K (2021 number). Can't really split that up without affecting the electoral quotient even worse.

@UrbanCourtyard Agreed, mixed use will always be win. I’ve seen Americans call NYC their only “real” city for this reason. Sadly, downtowns in many Canadian cities are similarly full of underused offices towers that technically *could* be converted to residential, but at obscene effort/expense.

@jbburant Yeah the American downtowns suck and now have the unenviable task of converting a bunch of worthless office space into residences Except Manhattan which has always also had people living in it

@Barney55575756 @BBDaybreakEU British English in the sense of spelling or word use, vernacular, and phraseology? I’m a native Canadian English speaker and have heard Brits using combinations of words and sentence structures I rarely encounter otherwise. Dialects aren’t slang and more than just accents.

@BBDaybreakEU This isn’t even remotely true, British English is the most commonly taught in schools around the world, “ta” and “you alright” are slang, which isn’t usually taught.

I remember once reading about how, when Britain was still in the EU, many EU Parliamentary sessions would see e.g. some Dutch guy speaking English to the assembly, and most listening without translation. And then some MEP from Tyneside takes the stand and the headsets all go on.
Strategic Advisor@BBDaybreakEU

Because most non-Britons are more used to American English, Britishisms throw many foreigners off. They'll be slightly bewildered at "you alright?" as a greeting, or "ta" as thanks. L2 speakers speaking 'international English' are often easier for other L2 speakers to understand.

@cian_elan @uncle_deluge I do not think more people living in the Canadian province of British Columbia can speak Mandarin than English.

@jbburant @uncle_deluge According to the most recent census, 312,625 people in British Columbia speak Mandarin and 327,350 speak French. That said, if you're talking about mother tongues, then Mandarin wins by a lot.

@kevinleewrites @moorehn If they need 30% pay increases, as suggested, they’re “only” 23% underpaid at present.

Okay, I’ll say it: Canada has a lot of sub-par provincial flags, many violating basic flag design principles. The most egregious are those flag-in-flag ensigns; automatic F-tier design. The Maple Leaf is and always will be iconic! 🇨🇦 ❤️
