This represents a strategic alignment between two players with complementary positions: Robinhood, the leading retail trading platform in the United States, and Bitstamp, a historic European platform with a strong institutional culture. "Together, we cover the entire spectrum," summarizes Jean-Baptiste Graftieaux. Robinhood, which quietly launched its crypto app in Europe in late 2023, is leveraging this acquisition to accelerate its international expansion. Bitstamp brings a comprehensive regulatory network – about fifty licenses worldwide – and a solid presence in Luxembourg, where the company has been established since 2016. "It has become our European heart," he recalls. The question of which country will host Robinhood's European operations remains open. Officially, the group currently operates through Lithuania, but some observers suggest a possible refocus in Luxembourg. Jean-Baptiste Graftieaux takes a measured approach: "Regardless of Robinhood's choices for its European operations, we will be well-positioned. In all scenarios, Luxembourg remains Bitstamp's natural anchor." Regarding the brand, no final decision has been made yet. Discussions are ongoing to determine whether Bitstamp will be absorbed or coexist with Robinhood. "These are two strong brands with distinct DNAs. These strategic considerations will continue after the acquisition is finalized." Beyond the regulatory framework, Bitstamp represents an innovation lever for Robinhood. The group has just obtained a MiFID license, paving the way for regulated derivatives products, and is developing a tokenization offering. It also continues its white-label business, particularly with Revolut. All these building blocks could eventually strengthen Robinhood's international offering. Both entities continue to operate independently while awaiting regulatory approval. But the objective is clear: to build a player capable of combining regulatory depth, institutional expertise, and large-scale distribution.
