Math Teachers- looking for ideas to help 3rd graders understand how much the number 100,000 represents. Any suggestions/images that you know of to help students visualize the size of the number? #mtbos. #elemmathchat #maththinkers #BTC

Need your Input! Which cover do you like best for my upcoming book with @teachergoals? Just type World or Light Bulb in the comments. I will randomly choose someone to win a first copy as well. Thank you and good luck!

@Amypbarrett These are for grades K-2. I have a sheet with each one that indicates the item and the number of items. Kits are in ranges of 10-31, 20-75, 5--200, etc.

@howie_hua @eluberoff 73 + 30 = 103 103 + 7 = 110 I usually add the ones to make a ten first but this one seemed to lend itself toward starting with the tens. #mentalmath

It's Mental Math Monday with guest @eluberoff! How would you mentally calculate 37+73?

@kimmontague @pwharris Thanks. I think the main thing I need to learn to do better is facilitating the problem strings in such a way that the students see the relationships of the numbers for themselves. Planning what questions I may need to ask will help!

@jblake2185 @pwharris Ahhh, I see you were in the recent challenge so that’s a yes! Pick an string and just start. Model thinking on number line as “I’m gonna represent like this…”. I’d start with Remove a FN.

How do you recommend introducing subtraction strategies to 3rd graders when their go to is the traditional algorithm (but frequently inaccurate). They also haven’t had experience with open number lines yet. #elemmathchat @pwharris @kimmontague

@RawdingMolly I just found a box of old keys at a garage sale to add to our counting collections. Are those sponges in the center container? Always looking for new ideas to add. #countingcollections

It's so fun (and a lot of work) getting #CountingCollections ready but they are so awesome! Love seeing what kids do as they estimate, organize, count, and make connections! Excited for this new collection to get out into classrooms!

@pwharris Oops- That should have said “strategy”, not “model”.

@pwharris The problem I had posted was 18 x 5. The students had several ways to solve, but none used the doubling/halving model. I put this model on the board, and I said, "Last year, a student did this. What do you notice?" This then led to conversations about doubling/halving.

Help me with some research: How many of your students regularly use doubling/halving for a multiplication problem like 35 x 18? Or 7.5 x 14? If so, did you introduce/teach that to them? How? #MTBoS #ITeachMath #MathIsFigureOutAble

@pwharris I put it on previous students (which is true) as I didn't want to take away from strategies they shared and feel they have to do it the way I did it. I don't want them mimicking, but wanted to nudge them toward another strategy.

@jblake2185 I’m curious - how did you introduce doubling/halving as a strategy?

With the three subtraction strategies @pwharris, is teaching the traditional algorithm necessary? Making sense of numbers and their place value- much easier. Worked with some students using the difference strategy; they found a new love for subtraction! #changemathclass

A5) We just spent the month of April promoting math and a growth mindset and showing how math is all around us and how each of us is a math person. My colleague found this video that we shared with the student and staff. #elemmathchat youtube.com/watch?v=sLPFaO…

A3: wodb, I feel @SteveWyborney’s work has a lot of this. Letting kids explore problems on their own with various materials. Also students draw pictures of word problems to show that they understand the problem. #ElemMathChat
