In the summer of 1998, Michael Thurman and I were a couple of years into our design careers and working at a large branding agency in Dallas, Texas. Upon doing research for a new project, we asked ourselves, “Who gets to design this stuff?” The “stuff” that we admired included the new look for the Denver Broncos, which had debuted in the previous NFL season. We were also impressed by teams like the New England Patriots, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Carolina Panthers, the logos for the MLB All-Star Game, and many other professional and collegiate teams that had introduced a “new look.” It became apparent to us that somewhere, somehow, agencies were making a living by designing these identities, and albeit foolishly, we wanted to be a part of that world. Over the next seven years, we researched, called, emailed, sent mailers, freelanced, and tracked down potential clients through every means possible in our pursuit of entering this emerging industry. The leaders at the time included SME (Edward O’Hara), Fanbrandz (Bill Frederick & D Thomas Froberg), and Todd Radom among others. Their work was incredible and truly inspired us. (As luck would have it, we eventually got to know them all.) We spent late nights building a “spec” portfolio to give the impression that we were experienced. We only knew we wanted to establish a boutique design studio focused on athletic branding and the entertainment industries—our true passions. Fast-forward to the summer of 2005. Everything was in place, and we took the leap. We both had young families and limited financial resources, but we were fueled by eagerness and passion. We didn’t have the advantage of prior experience working for a team or league; this was going to be a “boots-on-the-ground” effort. Somehow, we made it work, and it’s hard to believe it has been twenty years. Torch Creative is excited to celebrate our 20th anniversary this year and express our gratitude to all those who believed in us. We often say that 12-year-old Mike or Brad would never believe the clients we’ve had, such as the NHL, NBA, Goodyear Cotton Bowl, MiLB, Disney, Lucasfilm, the Collegiate Licensing Company, numerous colleges and universities, Hasbro, the ACC, the Kansas City Chiefs, Walt Disney Imagineering, Chris Creamer’s Sports logos site, and we’re excited to share many new surprises in 2025. To all those who gave us a chance, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your belief in us has helped us build many wonderful friendships along the way. We wouldn’t be where we are without you.
