Beyond the technical aspect, what I really want to achieve is to let the technique serve the emotions. I want the audience to forget about the camera movement, forget that there is a camera following behind, and only see the actors’ performances and the emotional flow happening in front of them. That is the effect I hope to achieve the most. However, due to scheduling constraints, every one-take shot is always something outside the original production plan — if we have enough time, we shoot it; if not, we have to abandon it. (A 3–5 minute one-take scene with precise choreography and positioning usually requires at least half a day to complete.) Thankfully, the scenes for the series this time went relatively smoothly. Moreover, the setting at CY’s family’s house provided us with incredibly favorable shooting conditions. The two rooms are connected in a circular layout, and with the additional space on the first and second floors, we were able to create very rich and challenging camera movements. It was the second-to-last day of filming for the first phase of the series. One morning, I suddenly had an idea. I couldn’t find any blank paper, so I grabbed a delivery package envelope beside me and started drawing on it. In ten minutes, I sketched out the entire route map for the one-take shot — the scene transitions, the actors’ movements, and the camera positions. After arriving on set, I first walked through the entire sequence with the cinematographer and the actors according to the drawing, checking whether there were any parts that couldn’t be achieved. After one rehearsal, everything went smoothly without any obstacles. During the day, we rushed through the scheduled scenes. At night, we had the whole evening free, so we began lighting the scene and arranging the props. We wanted to bring back every detail of the characters’ lives in the series. I worked with Guo-ge and incorporated every prop from the script that we could find on location. In the end, we completed this one-take shot for the series in 11 takes. (All the hidden details in this scene are open for everyone to interpret.) Throughout my work, I have always been deeply grateful to heaven. Many times, I tell the people around me that we should approach our work with humility and reverence, and when we receive blessings from above, we should be grateful. Just like the inspiration that suddenly came to me during those ten minutes that morning — I don’t believe it came solely from my professional skills. Instead, I firmly believe that heaven gave me the opportunity to bring it to life, helped me speed up the schedule during the day, and gave us the time we needed that night. These were gifts from above. Last year, while filming another project, I also experienced things like this more than once. When I wished for the wind, the wind came; when I wished for rain, the rain came. When I prayed for sunshine, the sun would appear through the rain. At the time, these things amazed the entire crew.
