Last week, I had the honor of joining leaders from across the nation in Geneva, Switzerland, to call attention to human rights violations in the United States with UN Human Rights officials, and representatives of member nations of the UN Human Rights Council. For the first time in the nearly 20 years the United Nations has held a Universal Periodic Review (UPR)—a global human rights evaluation that takes place every 4.5 years with each country - the United States, shamefully, did not participate. I was proud to join in the call-to-action urging the UN to hold the U.S. accountable by documenting the ongoing attacks and threats to basic human rights. You can view my full remarks below. Recognizing a state of Palestine has become a diplomatic cover to enable countries to continue their military and economic agreements with Israel. Recognizing Palestine must, at minimum, lead to imposing arms embargo to end Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza.

“This is not about Hamas, nor about military objectives, nor about the hostages whose release Netanyahu has systematically sabotaged. … this is a genocidal campaign that continues the denial of Palestinian freedom and seeks to impose Jewish supremacy, from the river to the sea.”

Hard to find words to describe the daily barbaric atrocities committed by Israeli forces against civilians fighting starvation in Gaza. Trump admin and US senators who recently met with Netanyahu must be held accountable for allowing Israel to continue the genocidal war.

This suggests UN expert Francesca Albanese is doing something right. US sanctions won’t deter her and other international human rights experts and bodies from speaking out and taking action against Israel’s mass atrocities in Palestine.
