@DanNeidle Get’s even worse when you think about position in Northern Ireland…
English

This is a real but probably inevitable issue with the new EV duty:
Craig@craiginscotland
@DanNeidle So say you took the EV to France for a month in the summer, how is that treated? Not that I’ve ever done that, or have plans to, but some do.
English

@JezzaH99 @paullewismoney @Moneybox @BBCRadio4 Well encouraging companies to use digital submission will increase the amount of data avaliable.
English

@jdcmansell @paullewismoney @Moneybox @BBCRadio4 What do you mean by tax gap? Making Tax Digital does not increase the tax collection by HMRC. At the moment MTD has nothing to do with tax other than numbers are submitted to HMRC.
English

800,000 self-employed people and landlords with turnover >£50k will have to submit tax accounts to HMRC five times a year under changes starting next April. Many don't know, others are unhappy. Minister in charge of Making Tax Digital James Murray live @Moneybox noon @BBCRadio4
English

@BootsUK when are you going to fix your Watford store downstairs shutters? It's most irritating and has been like that for a while..

English

What an absolutely disgraceful headline on this BBC news story.

@DanNeidle Also this change should reduce land values which will mean fewer estates are hit.
English

@campbellclaret I suspect the sun may be up if its close this will be a late one
English

It was obvious from the debate this was the line the advertising agency had told him to land. If only he was as tenth as good a PM as he is a good boy for the admen the country wouldn’t be in such a mess. Trouble is he landed all the other messages with the same vim and vigour and they didn’t move the dial because they’re not very good and the government is very bad. But as with Brexit the big online spend is coming and this is a sign of stuff to come complete with lies about policy sent direct to target groups @FullFact are going to be busy. And the admen should be given a bonus (by Labour)
Rishi Sunak@RishiSunak
I will never stop fighting for this country.
English

@motoway Ok you might want to watch out and add a sign as many people are hopping over fence
English

@jdcmansell Hi, James. Unfortunately, I can't provide an exact date when the play area will be open. However, the site team is aware of this and is working with the relevant teams to get the area reopened as soon as possible. ^Khloe
English

@motoway at #RugbyServices why is your outdoor playground locked?
English

@CutMyTaxUK @DanNeidle @resfoundation You could at the same time unlock small business to grow further who are currently below the vat threshold we have the highest vat threshold in Europe. Technology is massively reducing the cost of compliance. The threshold should be set to avoid trivial part time businesses
English

@DanNeidle @resfoundation While it may be amusing to quote some old article on the Adam Smith Institute blog the reality is that this is about trying to extract another £1.5bn from the private sector, and from very small businesses many of whom will struggle to cope.
English

Labour's new tax adviser Edward Troup wants to cut the VAT registation threshold to circa £40k, forcing hundreds of thousands of small businesses to devote their efforts to filling in VAT forms.
Labour advisers like @resfoundation, @DanNeidle etc. are pushing this scheme

@LeeDavidEvansUK @RhonddaBryant The 1949 Parliament Act was pretty radical you could argue.
English

@RhonddaBryant I'm aware of the history. I was mainly sharing some trivia, but to the extent I was making a point it's that Attlee worked within the existing constitution to try and improve people's lives, rather than wasting govt time tinkering with the constitution. Lab should learn from him.
English

Labour wasn’t always so hostile towards hereditary peerages.
Clement Attlee created a remarkable 82 of them after 1945 - and promoted a further eight Lords up the ranks of the peerage.
Financial Times@FT
Party insiders said the plan to remove all hereditary peers in the House of Lords would stop them from making or voting on laws, but they would be allowed to keep their passes to the Palace of Westminster on.ft.com/4aDZ9wP

@callummay @aliceolilly I believe this is the only example where there is a maximum age, rather than minimum age to be in the electorate for a head of state.
English

@aliceolilly The pope can choose as many people as he wants to elect his successor. Interestingly, electors aged over 80 are excluded
English

No, we don’t have an explainer on papal conclaves, sorry
Kate Ferguson@kateferguson4
EXCL: Latest on the plot to replace Rihsi Sunak with Penny Mordaunt Rebel plan to hold a Tory "papal conclave" to anoint next PM They want to oust Rishi & lock Tory MPs in a room & not let them out til there is white smoke Would be over in an afternoon thesun.co.uk/news/politics/…

@DanNeidle I trust there was a KC opinion saying it was all fine….

European Union has cut its intake of Russian gas to less than a third of the 155 billion cubic meters it imported in 2021; and tripled its imports of US liquefied natural gas, which reached 60 billion cubic metres in 2023. Now the Biden administration, in pursuit of its climate change goals, is looking at limiting gas export permits. Where would that leave Europe?
English

@DanNeidle I’m surprised PwC let them away with a contingent liability not an actual liability to repay tax.
