Part 3: Model Crittizens What designers needed was an aspirational example - something that would never have been possible in the old system. Not only would it prove the value of the tech - it'd inspire the team to dream bigger than boxes we were used to working in.

Why not upgrade sooner than Skyrim? The argument came down to something we'll call "time to parity". That is: how long will it take to implement a new language AND, crucially, before users can achieve the same results in it that they're currently capable of with the old tech?

Deeply subjective, but this duality is why critters struck me as a spark of unscripted genius, and why I think they resonated so well with players. So I've always been proud of my bit in making them happen. But again: that's artsy-fartsy. Let's talk about the technical side.

Skyrim turns 10 this week, and I'm taking the excuse to write a thread I've been meaning to do for a while. Let's talk about critters. 🧵

It's a nerdy little story, but I love it. Emergent Gameplay is often used to describe designed randomness, but this is a case of actual gameplay that NOBODY designed emerging from the bubbling cauldron of overlapping systems. And I think that's beautiful.

Alright, so inspired by @NPurkeypile's bee post yesterday, here is one of my favorite bits of Skyrim oral history - the myth of the treasure fox. I've told this story before in talks/etc, but I don't think I've shared it with twitter. Here goes.

@0xGradius Thank you so much! Yeah Bomb squad is very dear to me; I am very proud of how original and, just as importantly, authentic it feels. Financially it wasn't enough to make a sequel though, I had so many ideas...

@IridiumGameDev I have a UPS, and you have to hold the button down for a full 3seconds to turn it off. This was of no consequence to my cat 😡🤯

coding phrases that don't exist but should: perl-clutching: being controlling about how others code the floor is java: religiously avoiding certain languages or frameworks for no real reason seeing i to i: when developers actually agree on something
