The state dinnerware of Canada by potter Bill Reddick of Peterborough, Ontario. Had a crazy stroke of luck and found a porcelain vase he made at a thrift store right after I learned about him at the museum.

Ed Broadbent led the federal NDP from 1975 to 1989 and took it to its greatest pre-2011 success. Respected by politicians from every party, he served in Parliament for nearly a quarter century. This is his story. 🧵 1/10

Alberta's fiscal year ends in two weeks. With oil prices up, the government's deficit forecast of $4.1 billion is now on track for roughly half that. #ableg

The Color Guesser game sounds dull but is great fun for a few minutes. You are giving the name of a color and have to pick the right color. The game gives you a proximity score. Even better here is data showing how the community of guessers did. Play it here for free: beta.colorguesser.com

"Can we get rid of this ayatollah T-shirt? Khomeini died years ago." "But, Marge, it works on any ayatollah-- Ayatollah Nakhbadeh, Ayatollah Zahedi. As we speak, Ayatollah Razmara and his cadre of fanatics are consolidating their power." "I don't care who's consolidating their power."

You’re obviously wrong. The relationship between Treaty First Nations and the Canadian Crown cannot be modified or abrogated without the consent of the FNs. Whatever theory you might invent, FNs have been abundantly clear: they regard separation as a rupture of the Treaties. They will not accept it. They will resist it. And that resistance will lead to endless legal action, plus massive economic and social disruption. So with all due respect, your peculiar view on this is perfectly irrelevant. All that is relevant is the reaction of the Treaty rights holders. And you’re not one of them.
Keith Wilson, K.C.@ikwilson

Alberta independence does not undermine treaties. It respects both the treaties and the rights of First Nations First Nations would retain the right to decide whether to maintain the status quo with Canada, have Alberta assume federal responsibilities under the Treaties, or negotiate modern agreements with a new Alberta government. Many First Nations members are signing the petition because they want a better future than Ottawa has delivered. That deserves serious, respectful discussion — not fear-based rhetoric.

The Blame Canada crowd is angry with the appointment of Janice Charrette to lead trade negotiations with the US. (When are they not angry?) They claim that she’s unqualified, and a Liberal patronage appointee. Some facts: - Madame Charette actually started her career in Ottawa as a Conservative political staffer; - She served as Deputy Minister in some of the largest and most complex government departments; - She was appointed Clerk of the Privy Council (ie head of the Public Service and top advisor to the Prime Minister and Cabinet) by Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper; - She was then appointed to Canada’s second most important diplomatic head of mission role, as High Commissioner to the Court of St. James, ie representing Canada in the United Kingdom; - She was then re-appointed Clerk at PCO, the first person ever to serve in the highest role in Canadian public service twice, a reflection of the broad confidence in her ability. There is literally no one in Canada with more senior leadership experience in the public service, dealing with the most complex issues, systems, and crises. Some are trying to tie her to the Trudeau government’s invocation of the Emergencies Act. (N.B. I was the only Premier in Canada to challenge the constitutionality of its invocation.) To be clear: the role of the Clerk is not to provide the Prime Minister with their personal advice or opinion, but rather to offer an objective summary of the views of relevant government agencies and departments on a particular issue, and to outline the pros and cons of a course of action. That’s what Madame Charette would have provided to the Prime Minister per his request for advice on the EA. Per the motto of the Public Service: fearless advice, loyal implementation. In our system of responsible government, the Prime Minister and Cabinet are accountable for decisions, such as the EA invocation. Canada will be well served by having someone of Madame Charette’s ability and experience in such an important role.

We're now at 169 Liberal seats. That includes 3 vacancies, including 2 safe Ontario LPC seats. Should they win those two, the Liberals would be up to 171. That means the race in Terrebonne, which was decided by 1 vote, could decide if the Liberals have a majority or not #cdnpoli

I am honoured to welcome Matt Jeneroux to our caucus as the newest member of Canada’s new government. Building a stronger, more resilient, and more independent country will require ambition, collaboration, and occasionally, sacrifice. I am grateful to Matt and his family that he will continue his service as a strong voice for Edmonton Riverbend in Parliament. For more than a decade, Matt has been entrusted by Albertans to help shape a stronger future. He was first elected to Alberta’s Legislature in 2012 and to Canada’s Parliament in 2015 — earning four consecutive mandates in the House of Commons. In Ottawa, he has taken on portfolios that are central to Canada’s economic strength, security, and national resilience — including as Shadow Minister for supply chains, innovation, infrastructure, health, and housing. He is a strong voice in international engagement and parliamentary diplomacy, having served as Vice-Chair of the Canada-UK Interparliamentary Association and Founder of the Canada-ASEAN Parliamentary Group, and building direct working relationships with lawmakers across NATO, Europe, Asia, Africa, the United States and the OSCE. As a new special advisor on economic and security partnerships, Matt’s leadership will contribute to strengthening Canada’s alliances and trade partnerships, advancing Canada’s leadership in global security cooperation, and building our strength at home. The world has changed, and Canada must change with it. This is a time to come together — and together, we will build a stronger future for Edmonton, Alberta, and all Canadians.
