@LFried76 @ASFleischman I'm glad you're proposing solutions (unlike most in this thread) but the only single member districting process that works is Carnegie Mellon's "divide and choose" system. But multi-member districts are the best solution overall.

Mathematical districting formulas have advanced enough to take much of the political gaming out of redistricting — even if no system is perfect. Require districts to be contiguous, population-balanced, and compact using measures like Polsby-Popper, Reock, Convex Hull, and Schwartzberg. Then prohibit drawing lines based on political party, race, religion, or other immutable characteristics. Pair that with a much larger House, where no representative has more than 50,000 constituents, and you have a real formula for representative government: fair maps, smaller districts, and representatives who are actually close to the people they serve.

Both parties gerrymander whenever possible. This is bad. Neither party will ever unilaterally disarm. That is predictable. So why not just call a truce and pass a law to restrict it everywhere?
