And just to bottom-line it: Kentucky is not comporting itself as a top program in college basketball under Pope.
It just isn’t. Zero lottery pick-level high school recruits signed, one top-15 transfer (with a torn ACL) signed in three cycles.

Losing to Bill Self on the guy Self wanted most is not really a knock on Mark Pope. Putting your entire Class of 2026 recruiting focus on trying to get the guy Self wanted and everyone told you he would probably get … is a mind-boggling mistake.

Between Mark Pope liking a tweet about Stokes today, Mo Williams replying to Stokes' announcement tweet, and announcing the Justin McBride signing right before Stokes announced, today was a really bad look for this staff.

@KyleTuckerCBB Adapt or die is the key there... The AD has been notoriously slow to adapt to this new landscape. UK is constantly playing catch up in an ever changing world. He set UK up for failure

This isn't kicking. I say what I see. I did when Cal was there too. And it's not the silver bullet, but I've been saying and writing "hire a freakin' GM" for all of college basketball for literal years. Adapt or die.

Kentucky essentially passed on Rancik because they were sure they were getting Freeman. They got neither

Pitino stealing Freeman from Pope would be diabolical move…but in the portal there is no loyalty
For UK, getting neither Freeman or Rancik would be a huge fumble. Maybe they salvage it in another direction but the goal was to leave the weekend with one guaranteed

@KyleTuckerCBB No one has done more damage to Kentucky basketball than Mitch Barnhart. That should be the story. He had a rift with Cal. Cal was miserable. Mitch was stubborn. The losing end of all of this is Kentucky fans. But it's been said we were and are the problem

Funny thing is Cal is going on two years saying this. He's really putting a finer point on it since his run at the SEC Tournament and into this one.
Because he's 100 percent taking a shot at Mitch Barnhart. I think he rehearses these lines in the mirror, then winks at himself.

The reason Mark Pope's comments get dissected so much now is because he's had so many weird comments this season. The elite coaches I've spent any time around are highly effective, usually efficient, communicators.

I totally take issue with "don't believe anything you read" and then he declines twice to refute a specific reported number. Do some reporting on it? We went straight to the source and asked you. So if it's wrong, say so and stand on it. Lotta microphone fumbles from Pope.

Pope is asked about the pressure to win with people talking about $$$ spent on rosters today… It’s something we’re all chasing. If there’s no pressure, you’re not in the mix. But it can add distractions. Accuracy in reporting has taken a massive, insane hit on a daily basis. We’re constantly seeing things asking if anyone believes this stuff. Pope is directly asked about offering a player $7-9M… Kinda dances around the question, reiterates that reporting may not be the most accurate. Says to BBN: Please don’t believe anything you read about anything. It’s probably around 5% accurate. But that comes with the job at Kentucky. Asked about the $7-9M again, Pope says he’s not going to give people a headline, but encourages someone to dig in and do some good reporting.
