@andybliu Thanks! @kchienw just posted about Singapore. I know only the barest outlines of Japanese simplification, which I believe happened after WW2, but there were earlier reform efforts (including kana and Rōmaji societies in the 19th c.)

Language is material! Many thanks to the reviewers, as well as the managing editors Melissa Brown and Max Bohnenkamp, who saw it through to the finish line. 6/6

In part, this unwillingness led to the demise of simplification until the Communists took it up again in the 1950s. 5/6

Next semester I'm teaching (in English) a graduate seminar in sociology on contemporary Chinese society. l'll shamelessly use it to catch up on all the recent social science (and adjacent) books on China. I'd be deeply grateful for any recommendations!

Thanks so much to @kuokuomich and @albertowu for their wisdom and support as I wrote personally for the first time in a long while! A true privilege to appear in their latest Substack post:

"Being closeted is a skill ... It’s remembering who you’ve told what when and where." This wonderful essay by @jeffreyweng describes coming out—or as he puts it, fail to come out—in Taiwan, where an “undercurrent of conservatism belies its happy surface.” ampleroad.substack.com/p/forgetting-h…

Super excited to be a respondent to this talk by Michael Burawoy on decolonizing sociological canons, Marxism, & Du Bois next Saturday, moderated by Yan Long at Berkeley & @fredyan at Tsinghua, joined by 3 original sociologists zooming from China. The event will be in English.

@thian_un Great questions! One would imagine guanhua speakers to be character-literate? Nanjing bias did persist well into the 19th c.; Wade was a pioneer in favoring Beijing. More Coblin (2000 jstor.org/stable/606615) @DGTam86 has a great chapter on missionary translations!
