@jenbuttars @BenisonMrs Yes, try successive blending. If they're reading the word bat, have them point and say /b/ and /a/, then have them blend those two together /ba/. If they can't blend those two, do it for them and have them repeat /baaaa/ then show the t. /t/ ba-t, bat. Repeat with other words.

@BenisonMrs @LindsayKemeny suggestions for a 2nd grader who knows their letter sounds but cannot blend sounds together? Either as a PA task with or without letters or decoding cvc. Ts are using UFLI, 95%, and Heggerty.

@technologylaura I really strive not to. Although I’m also always in teacher mode: on the lookout for new info, thinking about improvement, thinking about reaching the tough kids.

@MrZachG It takes a master teacher to sit in that just right pocket of discovery. And the Ss still need to have been taught some stuff. Thinking about my 5th grade volume lesson series

I have seen poorly executed explicit teaching lessons, but they were decent enough and easily improved through coaching. I have seen far more unsalvageable discovery lessons. It’s not that the teacher was inactive or had poor management! It’s the freaking discovery part.

@MrZachG It will work, it just hasn't been truly tried there yet

Dump the “data,” and follow the feedback if you’re serious about getting serious about teaching and learning. #Project180

@jenbuttars @heymrsbond Both are sadly inadequate. You can only enforce a 504 if you can prove in court that the school violated the student’s *civil rights*, not that they just didn’t follow the plan. IEPs go to due process & are easier to defend, but it costs time & $$

Quick note for families with either a 504 or IEP: If there’s a choice, always go for an IEP. It has (some) legal teeth. A 504 is virtually impossible to enforce. If your child has any need for services, they should have an IEP. A 504 does not include them

@AbbyTeachesDSM Yes! And this is what gets missed in so many of the "with fidelity" (and other) conversations. My social studies students pretty much all get A's. Not because I'm an easy grader - but because of the classroom conditions.

And yes, we laugh, and read books, and count, and play with games and toys, and sing, and have snack and recess and all the things. And bc of our classroom conditions, we get to do more of all those things too. 💕 THAT is why my kids are making the growth they are. 8/8

🎙️Tonight, I was talking to a friend in another district was asked what I’m doing with my kinders to see the growth I am. Her district uses the same Foundational Skills program I do and they aren’t seeing the data they were hoping for. 1/8

@sage_stage It's both. There are people (past me included) that will appreciate every opportunity for extra $$. It's a slippery slope if the district is going to expect everyone to have the knowledge from the optional PD.

So here's a new thing that's happening. We've got a day off of school coming up for Veterans day. The district has introduced optional, paid asynchronous PD that you can do from home that day. Good deal, or slippery slope?

I was looking at the past results for one of my least successful students. She was one of the last holdouts in our virtual program before returning to in person. 1) Virtual learning was absolutely a positive for some students 2) Virtual learning is not for everybody

@eduleadership Thank you for clarifying. Because of my sitch I have always used classroom work time as a chance to help students figure out their needs. Usually they figure out pretty readily if the music is a help or a distraction. But that’s just me.
