@jengroves_ Has this underpayment been allocated to your tax code to be collected in the 26/27 tax year? Thanks, Anas

@HMRCcustomers is there a deadline to pay off a tax bill from tax year 24/25 in a lump sum? Can the lump sum be paid off up until April 26 before monthly payments come out? And can you pay off the lump sum in separate payments or has to be all at once?

@jengroves_ Hi Jen. Is this an underpayment for PAYE, Simple assessment or Self assessment? Thanks, Anas

@HMRCcustomers My employer rectified my tax code in December 24, but no tax was deducted from December 24 to March 25. I thought extra tax would be taken later once it was corrected from April 2025. Is there anything I can do since my employer didn’t apply the correction during those months?

@jengroves_ Morning Jen, no we don't add any interest, just the amount of the underpayment is collected. Nancy

@HMRCcustomers if you owe HMRC tax and you wait for the deductions to be taken from wages over 12 months starting April 2026, will interest be added to the total amount owed? If so, how much interest?

@HMRCcustomers I think you’ve misunderstood. I have already provided you the figures for my 23-24 interest. So when can I pay the tax owed as a lump sum?

@jengroves_ Thanks. You can provide the figures either over the phone or by post, when we reconcile the 23-24 year if tax is owed we'll send you a P800 tax calculation. Sofia

@HMRCcustomers how do you pay your tax for 23-24 (interest on savings) instead of tax code changing? I was told by one of your colleagues that I can do this on government gateway but I can’t see where it says this.

@HMRCcustomers Yes that’s correct. I informed you last week how much interest I earned on my savings for 23-24 tax year. I would rather just pay the tax as a lump sum than my tax code changing this year

@HMRCcustomers Great thanks - would the tax owed appear on the government gateway account?

@HMRCcustomers When I inform you how much interest I have earned on savings, can I pay the tax separately at the end of the tax year instead of my tax code changing? I would prefer to do this

@HMRCcustomers One last thing, do I need to file a self assessment tax return if I have a bank account open in Canada? It isn’t earning interest, just a debit account. I was born there and live in UK so I only use it when I am visiting Canada

@jengroves_ If you know the amount you'll receive, you can notify now. If not, you can do this when the tax year ends in April 2024. Suchona

@HMRCcustomers do I need to file a self assessment tax return if I earn over £1000 in interest from savings? I am in the bracket where I pay 20% tax

@HMRCcustomers When is the deadline to do this by? As I am earning interest every month in this tax year so it changes

@jengroves_ You'll still need to notify HMRC of the interest you earn from savings even if it's below the Personal Savings Allowance. You can contact our helpline and an adviser can update this for you. The number is 0300 200 3300, open Monday to Friday 8am-6pm. Suchona

@HMRCcustomers Thank you - I completed the questionnaire and it tells me I don’t need to file a self assessment tax return. Would I not need to inform HMRC about the interest I earn on savings then? It wouldn’t go over the 10K threshold it mentions in the questionnaire
