[Exclusive] "Find the malicious commenter @7hy*jin"... IU requests identity disclosure from U.S. court
[Dispatch = Reporter Koo Min-ji] Singer and actress IU is taking this to the very end. She has set out to identify the perpetrator behind persistent malicious posts.
On the 15th, IU filed an application for discovery against Meta under Title 28, Section 1782 of the United States Code in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. This action was taken to secure materials to be used in an ongoing civil defamation lawsuit in South Korea.
According to the application confirmed by 'Dispatch', IU specified the Threads account '@ 7hy*jin' (hereinafter referred to as A). IU expressed grievances that A had damaged her honor and reputation by writing a total of 52 false posts from March to October of last year.
IU's legal team stated that it is difficult to continue the lawsuit in South Korea because they have been unable to identify A's identity. They requested the U.S. court to order Meta to submit information it holds, including the user's name, address, phone number, email, and login IP.
First, they claimed that A repeatedly uploaded posts to the effect that "IU plagiarized other singers' music." IU's side explained that this specific claim was already legally recognized as defamation in 2024, resulting in a 30 million KRW (~$22,000 USD) damages ruling.
They also claimed that A repeatedly posted false information, such as referring to IU as a Chinese national or an agent of Chinese capital. The application included posts claiming, "The organizations and cosmetics brands that IU donates to are also Chinese companies," and "She is an ethnic Chinese who speaks Cantonese well."
A also repeatedly uploaded posts to the effect that "IU actually has no popularity overseas, and When Life Gives You Tangerines was a failure in foreign markets." IU's team countered this by presenting international streaming data and global performance records as evidence.
Furthermore, A repeatedly shared videos with titles like "Exposing the severity of female singer B's marketing using the deceased," mentioning the late Sulli, Jonghyun, and Goo Hara. The filing specified that A spread false information claiming IU exploited the deaths of the deceased.
IU's side noted that the account also repeatedly uploaded posts containing allegations of media control and public opinion manipulation. This included content stating, "It's my first time seeing a celebrity control the media like the Chinese Communist Party. Even politicians can't do it like this."
A went as far as linking IU's songs to national tragedies. A posted that "'Strawberry Moon' refers to the Itaewon tragedy, and 'Ah puh' is a song mocking the Sewol ferry tragedy." IU's side asserted that A spread these false claims without any factual verification.
IU has consistently pursued legal action against malicious commenters. Last February, she revealed that criminal complaints and civil lawsuits were underway against a total of 96 individuals. In May, a netizen was sentenced in an appellate court to 4 months in prison, suspended for 1 year.
