NEW: Belgian Football Association lets rip… Say “astonished” by FIFA decision …”the decision is in direct contradiction with the provisions of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Competition Regulations”… say they are investigating all avenues… 🎇 nytimes.com/athletic/74236…

@cmclymer Ultimately Americans love Trump, they love his corruption if it serves their own narrow interests. That is why he is successful. Trump makes this happen and the entire country cheers him for it. Zero chance he or a successor of his choosing not president after 2028

If other countries are pissed about Balogun's red card being lifted, they can stayed pissed. Wanting to punish a 25-year-old who did nothing wrong and has carried himself well just because you're angry at Trump and FIFA is weak sauce.

@thomaschattwill Another great match. Unfortunately, I was distracted by the news that Trump pressured the easily corrupted FIFA to let Balogun play tomorrow. I’m a big USMNT fan, but any further success will be tainted. The honorable move: keep Balogun on the bench.

@pmfaulk75 @AdamCrafton_ “That ruling has been reversed.” Not exactly. The red card penalty was suspended but the red card remains; he’s on probation for one-year. Oh, and the ruling only happened because the US President pressured the corrupt FIFA President to do so.

@jetucker59 @AdamCrafton_ The WC is played once every 4 years and you have a player who was wrongfully be suspended for a game bc a terrible call. That ruling has been reversed. Whether to play him or not at this point isn’t even a question.

@kylegriffin1 Any advantage of having Balogun play will be cancelled by Belgium’s extra motivation.

NYT confirms: Trump personally asked FIFA to review a U.S. player's suspension. Now he's eligible to play. The reversal of Folarin Balogun's World Cup suspension is highly unusual. It was the first time since 1962 that FIFA has nullified a suspension for a red card received during the World Cup.

@kylegriffin1 Pathetic. The USMNT should keep Balogun on the bench. Any further success will be tainted.

@DZimmer23 @AdamCrafton_ No. FIFA didn’t make a ruling based on the on the misuse of VAR. Balogun’s red card remains and he’s on probation for one-year.

@5hk @jetucker59 @AdamCrafton_ Seems to me they suspended based on the application of VAR…so I’ll go with the fact it wasn’t applied fairly. Makes sense to me! Have a great day man and go USA!!!

@theREAL_english @5hk @AdamCrafton_ Even if you are correct (which I don’t think you are), FIFA didn’t suspend the red card for a violation of the VAR rules. In fact, the red card stands and Balogun is on probation for one-year. Anyway, like you, I hope the USMNT wins.

@5hk @jetucker59 @AdamCrafton_ Using freeze frames of contact and slow motion to determine intensity isn’t standard. The rules actually state normal speed should be used. But alright!

@DZimmer23 @AdamCrafton_ Who decided the red card was a misuse of VAR? You just didn’t like the decision. Neither did I. But the rules are the rules.

@theREAL_english @AdamCrafton_ Slow motion replays are permitted for “point of contact for physical offenses” (FIFA uses the IFAB “rules of the game”). I didn’t agree with the call, but the rules can’t be overturned because of bad calls.

@jetucker59 @AdamCrafton_ Do you know the rules? Do you know you can’t use slow motion replays for VAR on contact calls? It should have been a missed call just like when Bosnia was grabbing his fucking jersey in the box lol

@trippinong @AdamCrafton_ I agree. The call was bad. But those are the rules. Plenty of bad calls are made but they aren’t corrected after the match, let alone one day before the next match when the opponent (Belgium) has been preparing for a team without Balogun.

@pescami I was just catching up on recent episodes of The Gist. Say it ain’t so, Mike! Now you’ll have more time to value the stillness and glory of nature, but you will be missed!

But the real reason is that Roberto Alomar and I are in Dad's group examining the backyard birds of North America. And while Alomar is a Hall of Famer who is also on the ineligible list because of past sexual misconduct allegations, he and I both value the stillness and glory of nature.

@sarahhepola Not sure I should be giving fashion advice, but I never thought I'd see MM wearing a Henley, even if this style of shirt is supposedly making a comeback :)
