"I went to see Niagara Falls. I told myself that if I lost, I would jump in. It was winter, so the falls were frozen, and the surface of the water looked like a bed of ice nails. I headed to the venue thinking, 'If I jump and I'm still conscious when I hit the bottom, I'll be impaled and die. That's gonna hurt.'"
For Yoshiki Takahashi, a fateful appearance in UFC in 1997 was a matter of life or death.
The Pancrase fighter was entered into a Lightweight tournament, where his first obstacle was Wallid Ismail - a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu black belt who had trained under the legendary Carlson Gracie. Ismail earned the nickname "Gracie Killer" in Brazil after defeating various members of the family, most notably Royce later on.
The topic of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu loomed large over Japan at the time, as did UFC itself. By 1997, the ultimate collision between Nobuhiko Takada and Rickson Gracie was imminent - years in the making - yet the rivalry between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Japan stretched back to the earlier part of the century. UFC was another black ship arriving on Japanese shores, and it is worth remembering that the promotion was originally conceived to establish BJJ and the Gracies as the supreme martial arts discipline and family.
Many pro wrestling fans will recall the merciless beating Yoji Anjo received at the hands of Rickson Gracie. There are striking parallels between Anjo and Takahashi. Anjo, in the face of mounting pressure from Gracie dominance, harboured hopes that either himself or a fellow midcard wrestler could puncture the myth, creating the narrative of "if Anjo can take Gracie, what could Takada do?" Takahashi carried the same burden of pride, fighting not only for himself but for the Pancrase brand and his seniors, Masakatsu Funaki and Minoru Suzuki.
UFC in the 1990s was the Wild West: untamed, unfiltered, a world away from the comparatively measured atmosphere of Japan. Takahashi was drawn to that very contrast.
"Once we started Pancrase, we began fighting various foreigners from Holland, America, and elsewhere. I began to wonder if there was a fundamental difference in psychological preparation between those who live in a gun culture and those of us raised in a relatively safe Japan."
"'A ring is easy because it's just bare hands.' I couldn't exactly go out and start knife fights in the streets at night, so I figured if there are no knives or guns, the UFC was the most extreme danger available - and the wall I had to overcome."
Takahashi had stared into the frozen abyss of Niagara Falls and made his peace with death. Now, all that stood between him and the edge was Wallid Ismail. What happened next would shake him to his very core... (1/2)
