@WesternLensman I think Jasmine would blink less if she didn't glue caterpillars to her eyelids.

Utopia is not the standard. Reality is.
Every civilisation has sins if you judge it by today’s moral standards. You can build an entire career doing nothing but listing them. That is easy.
The harder question and the only one that matters is this: compared to actual, existing alternatives, who has done better?
I am not claiming the West is perfect. It is not. No society is. But if you are honest about measurable progress on rights, equality, and self-correction, it is still ahead of every other major system in the world today.
So stop asking "is it perfect?" That is a childish question.
Ask: "compared to what?"

Just so everyone is aware:
The site is awash today in FALSE claims that the Supreme Court is violating its own rule about not making changes in voting cases too close to an election.
The "Purcell" principle is that federal courts should not ORDER changes in voting cases too close to an election date and put the burden on states to figure out how to comply.
What has happened today is that the Supreme Court has simply ALLOWED Alabama to decide for itself what it wants to do in the aftermath of the decision in the Louisiana decision last week.
Democrats and their supporters are LYING.
Plain and simple.

@chicagotribune "catalyst for a newly energized Chicago" << Such a load of crap. Worst president ever.

@primerelic There is usually a good reason a car is rare. The public did not consider it value for money.

@davidhazony @JewofJewdea ‘Much less compelling’. Yes. But life is not all about political standing. You need to have enough political standing to accomplish your policy objectives. Any more than enough is, in a sense, wasted. Especially if the extra has comes at the cost of foregoing progress on policies
English

I’m suggesting that when you list objectives explicitly and publicly, do not attain them, and then claim victory, it’s much less compelling to voters than if you do attain them. You don’t want to be Olmert claiming victory after Lebanon II. Same thing. Only this time I believe Trump knows it.

I will be shocked if these rumors of a deal become a deal. How many times have we been through this? Rumors of a deal, usually transmitted by Axios, flutter about as the U.S. continues to build forces. The proposed agreement, with all its detail, sounds nothing like a win for Trump, even though he is not the type to settle for anything less than a politically plausible win. The talks break down, and another round of war ensues. It’s all a game.
I could be wrong.
English

@davidhazony @JewofJewdea I understand that all public statements are smoke. I was referring to your list of objectives. Are you suggesting that those were not smoke?
English

@jffmyr @JewofJewdea You’re not following. This is not a closed negotiation. It’s also an election campaign. And any *public* statements during the negotiation are more about that than about the deal itself.
English

@davidhazony @JewofJewdea I want to sell my house for $10 billion. I'll list it for that. I'll say that is my goal. But i'll accept $500,000.
I wonder if you make the mistake of believing the Listed first offer. Do you imagine that statesmen reveal publicly their complete unvarnished intent.
English

@JewofJewdea How is it a win? The administration repeatedly discussed 4 aims: 1) zero enrichment, 2) zero leftover enriched uranium, 3) zero support for proxies, and 4) zero missiles beyond a certain range. How many were achieved?
English

@JewofJewdea @davidhazony re: "Unfortunately, as we saw with the Houthis, Trump will back down."
The binary framing of 'back down/don't back down' clouds the perceptions, imho. I think a more appropriate framing would consider whether a venture improved conditions at an acceptable cost.
English

@davidhazony I think there's enough here for him to verbally construct a "win".
Unfortunately, as we saw with the Houthis, Trump will back down.
Maybe I'm pessimistic but it's not looking good.
