Software horror: litellm PyPI supply chain attack. Simple `pip install litellm` was enough to exfiltrate SSH keys, AWS/GCP/Azure creds, Kubernetes configs, git credentials, env vars (all your API keys), shell history, crypto wallets, SSL private keys, CI/CD secrets, database passwords. LiteLLM itself has 97 million downloads per month which is already terrible, but much worse, the contagion spreads to any project that depends on litellm. For example, if you did `pip install dspy` (which depended on litellm>=1.64.0), you'd also be pwnd. Same for any other large project that depended on litellm. Afaict the poisoned version was up for only less than ~1 hour. The attack had a bug which led to its discovery - Callum McMahon was using an MCP plugin inside Cursor that pulled in litellm as a transitive dependency. When litellm 1.82.8 installed, their machine ran out of RAM and crashed. So if the attacker didn't vibe code this attack it could have been undetected for many days or weeks. Supply chain attacks like this are basically the scariest thing imaginable in modern software. Every time you install any depedency you could be pulling in a poisoned package anywhere deep inside its entire depedency tree. This is especially risky with large projects that might have lots and lots of dependencies. The credentials that do get stolen in each attack can then be used to take over more accounts and compromise more packages. Classical software engineering would have you believe that dependencies are good (we're building pyramids from bricks), but imo this has to be re-evaluated, and it's why I've been so growingly averse to them, preferring to use LLMs to "yoink" functionality when it's simple enough and possible.

HOY EN EL EVENTO PRO PRESENTAMOS OPENARG Desde @colossus_lab hicimos un chat con IA que se conecta a los datos públicos de Argentina, son 1.800 tablas cacheadas con 27 millones de filas de datos pre-descargados. Se llama OpenArg. Le preguntás lo que quieras -inflación, dólar, presupuesto, declaraciones juradas- y te responde con gráficos, datos y las fuentes. Sin saber programar. Sin descargar nada. ¿Por qué lo hicimos? Argentina tiene más de 16.000 datasets en 32 portales de datos abiertos. Están dispersos, en formatos distintos, y para usarlos necesitás saber de datos. Eso no es transparencia. Los datos están, pero nadie los puede usar. La idea detrás de OpenArg: si la información pública está estructurada, la IA puede leerla, compararla y analizarla. No para reemplazar a nadie. Para que cualquiera pueda entender lo que hoy solo entienden los técnicos. ¿Cómo funciona? Cuando preguntás algo, se activan 4 agentes: 1- Estratega → arma un plan con tu pregunta. 2- Investigador → busca en 12 fuentes oficiales. 3- Analista → cruza los datos. 4- Redactor → arma la respuesta con gráficos y citas. No inventa. Cada respuesta tiene las fuentes con links a los portales oficiales. Inflación → INDEC. Dólar → BCRA. El stack: Next.js 16, TypeScript, arquitectura multi-agente, PostgreSQL + pgvector, 12 conectores a APIs oficiales (CKAN, BCRA, INDEC, Georef, DDJJ, Congreso). 2 llamadas a IA por consulta. Pero OpenArg no es solo un buscador. Si sos intendente de un municipio de 5.000 habitantes, podés comparar tu gestión con municipios parecidos. Ver qué hacen otros. Copiar lo que funciona. Estoy enfrentado el mismo desafío, en una materia de ingeniería en FIUBA, que los alumnos aprendan a gestionar. El desarrollo de productos está cambiando, las herramientas, las buenas prácticas, el balance entre en trabajo de distintos roles, los roles! Cuando yo era estudiante, un profe de física nos decía "me enseñaron física con válvulas y yo les enseño con semiconductores de silicio, cuando salgan a trabajar a trabajar, ya no se usarán. No importa, lo importante es que hayan aprendido a analizar los problemas y aplicar los principios" Me inspira y me desafía, cuales son los principios?

Ayer estuve conversando con estudiantes avanzados de ingeniería y licenciatura en sistemas de UDELAR y ORT. Fue una de esas charlas que, más que responder preguntas, te obliga a repensar qué es lo importante decir. No porque falte información sino porque estamos en un momento donde es fácil confundirse sobre qué significa realmente “estar preparado”. Vi talento, curiosidad, ganas de salir a hacer. Y al mismo tiempo, una sensación muy presente: ¿ya debería estar trabajando?, ¿qué debería estar aprendiendo?, ¿en qué enfocarme en medio de tanto cambio? Ahí fue donde me salió una reflexión casi inevitable. No desde la teoría, sino desde contraste. Porque cuando yo estudié, el mundo era radicalmente distinto. No había internet, no había web, no había celulares, no había SaaS. Ni siquiera había una GUI usable como la de hoy. Hasta cuarto de facultad no tuve computadora propia. Programaba en papel. Literal. Llené cuadernos enteros antes de poder ejecutar una línea. Y sin embargo, o quizás por eso, aprendimos algo más importante que cualquier tecnología: aprendimos a aprender. La universidad, en su esencia, no está para enseñarte herramientas. Está para darte estructuras mentales. Matemática. Probabilidad. Arquitectura. Sistemas operativos. Cómo escribir código, sí —pero como forma de pensar, no como fin. Ahora, para los que sienten que ya están listos para trabajar: Tienen razón… pero ojo con interpretar mal qué significa eso. La industria cada vez va a necesitar menos “coders” (entendidos como personas que traducen requerimientos a código). Pero ingeniería nunca fue eso. Entonces, ¿qué hacer? Primero: entiendan que el mundo está lleno de problemas. Y en lo digital, está lleno de problemas mal resueltos. Segundo: acérquense a esos problemas. Hablen con la gente. Escuchen. Entiendan el contexto real. Con gente que quizás tienen más cerca de lo que piensan. Tercero: incorporen lo nuevo, pero con criterio: •entiendan lo básico de Generative AI •construyan su primer agente •comprendan sistemas distribuidos •lean algo de robótica •aprendan UX (arquitectura, interacción, visual) Cuarto: salgan de su burbuja. Hablen con gente de otras facultades. Los problemas reales no vienen separados por carreras. Y quizás lo más importante: No se enamoren de herramientas. El ecosistema cambia. Siempre. Enamórense de problemas. Después de uno. Después de otro. Tienen algo que muchos perdemos con el tiempo: tiempo para explorar. Úsenlo. Porque si realmente aprenden a aprender, esta no va a ser “la revolución de su carrera”. Va a ser la primera de muchas.
