Should you consider DOD funding for your research? I created a free course to help you answer that question. Unlocking DOD Funding for University Researchers is based on my experience as a program manager at major DOD funding organization. This course has 8 lessons: ✅ Why Consider DOD Funding (17 min) ✅ The DOD Approach to Funding (25 min) ✅ DOD Funding Organizations (50 min) ✅ DOD Programs (36 min) ✅ How to Search for DOD Funding (18 min) ✅ How to Learn what DOD has Funded (10 min) ✅ Connecting with People at DOD (25 min) ✅ Taking the Next Steps (16 min) And gives you three keys: 🔑 How DOD funding can become *easier* to win than at other funders 🔑 How you can connect with DOD scientists and engineers who are ready to collaborate 🔑 They key to winning *big* DOD awards Check it out at the link below: stan.store/WiseInvestigat…

Early voting report: the first time voter next to me was also named Theodore, they ring a cowbell whenever a first-time voter votes, I heard a lot of cowbells, and there were lots of students in line. Very happy! Let's go @KamalaforNC!

@CterminiPhD I was told quite a few times "you don't look old enough to have your job", and that happened up until my mid-40s. Then during Covid it seems all the signs of aging caught up with me and no one says that anymore. It lasted for a long time though and always felt yucky.

Not sure why I need to say this… but it’s not funny/cool to make a joke about the PI of a lab looking like an undergrad when you know damn well I’m the PI of the lab. 1) Undergrads can be any age 2) This is what a PI looks like 3) Would you make the same joke to a dude PI?

@iGrrrl People also say that when speaking about service providers, like 'I use Sarah for dog sitting'. Just say 'Sarah is our dog sitter'. That always bothers me.

Friday afternoon grant writing (or paper writing) thought. A proposal I'm editing said something about, "In our preliminary work using [population]..." Never "use" a population. These are people who choose to participate. Honor their humanity.

I am thankful for my family, current and former students, postdocs, collaborators, and my PhD advisors, my mentors from Sandia, who make it possible. Excited for the next chapter!

@iGrrrl It makes a difference. I was (and am) fortunate to have such 'sponsors'.

Random Monday Thread: When I talk about the roles you play as a PI, there are the "business" roles--Entrepreneur, Manager, Expert--and the other roles--Mentor, Coach, Leader, Sponsor. I want to say a few things about Sponsor. 🧵

Thanks to @Liber_Rex for creating a logo that represents what my business is about. It's especially important to me that we used a heart to represent the intuition that leads to great discoveries as well as the care that drives the service we provide to clients. Thanks also to RedBird Screenprinting in Raleigh who always do excellent work. Ready for conferences!

Thinking about applying for NSF CAREER? I just published the next video in my free Countdown to CAREER video training series. There is an exercise that goes along with this one, but I promise it's not too much work and very worthwhile at this stage. If you do what I suggest now you could save yourself a lot of time down the road! youtube.com/watch?v=kG94VU…

@AdrianoAguzzi "Emulate" is a word that started being used way, way more ~5 years ago so not surprised to see it/a related word anywhere anymore.

@prof_wiley I can have a hard time convincing junior PIs that providing a summary that a 5 yo can understand is a good idea, often because they don't want to be seen a 'talking down' to someone. But that's not what happening! Agree with all, from a funding perspective.

I’ve just reviewed a lot of faculty applications, and I want to put out some advice for writing the best research statement possible. Feel free to add if I’m missing something: (1) Who cares? What will your work's ultimate impact be if everything goes perfectly? Your work has to solve a problem, either scientific or practical, or ideally, both, that a lot of people will care about. (2) How are you different? If you’re working on an important problem, it's likely other people are working on the same problem. What distinguishes your approach? What gives you and your approach a better chance of success? What gives you an edge that will allow you to be a leader in the field? (3) Don’t boil the ocean. Part of what the research statement is supposed to demonstrate is an ability to write fundable proposals that are scoped appropriately. While you want to make it clear you will have a broad impact, you also need to show you can scope a project that is appropriate for a single proposal. Focusing on a certain area can also be a distinguishing feature for you. (4) Simplify. Simplify. Simplify. If people outside of your field can’t understand what you’re proposing, that’s a big problem. Try to avoid field-specific jargon where possible. Create a summary at the top that a five-year-old can understand. Focus on making the most important points clearly, succinctly, and repeatedly. Stick to your best ideas.
