singapore is the highest iq country that has never shipped anything that matters. this is my essay on why there are no great singaporean companies. we are a nation of compradors; middlemen too domesticated to do anything but serve.

Singapore is an air-conditioned nation. The plant which grows in the greenhouse cannot withstand the storm. Its citizens suffer from two malaises: Comfort and Conformity. Everything is much too comfortable. A Singaporean can go an entire lifetime without coming into contact with reality. The prosperous, comfortable lives of Singaporeans comes from subsidy by the state, & yet this prosperity is more of a socialist prosperity, which is distributed in service of social outcomes, rather than a prosperity that is generated through the +EV effort of Singaporeans creating economic value. This leaves Singaporeans often with a feeling of “unreality”, working bullshit jobs, being comfortable, sleepwalking their way through life. Beyond getting your home, or your next trip to Japan or a festival, there is not much to strive for. The government works hard to ensure employment for Singaporeans, by bringing in foreign companies to start branches here (with tax incentives) & forcing them to hire locals, and even employing vast swathes of locals in the government with jobs that pay enough to upkeep their lifestyles. As an engineered economy, it’s fantastic and stable. But it’s a greenhouse, which explains why all seems to wilt. It is hard to find truly generational talent and ambition here, it is much too comfortable. As a startup, it’s nigh impossible to hire in Singapore because to many, why grind at a startup, if you can afford everything while working a job that gives you prestige? Singapore is one of the few countries in which a person can live their entire life within this bubble. Everyone comes to you. Many never have to work part time. Jobs come to you. The schools are right here. You never have to leave your family home. As such you have grown adults who never learnt to cook, do laundry or accept discomfort and solitude. Comfortable. Although we develop much human capital, we also do not really provide the preconditions for greatness to emerge. Non conformity is often punished, or at the very least, judged. Intense academic competition, and being judged for every activity since you were 12. You are forever on a scorecard. You are always assigned a rank at every turn. A series of Pass/Fail gates every few weeks, until you’re middle aged with children in a government subsidized, allotted and ballotted HDB. This requires you to make and clear a certain amount of income as well, and we all know that means sitting in an air conditioned office 99% of the time. Hence the dearth of musical and creative opportunities outside of state sponsorship. Every dollar spent is ruthlessly optimized, to the point where credit card points conversations are a common topic. As @hoeflatoor mentions as well, “Sinkie pwn Sinkie” is a common phenomenon. Some of the smartest, most capable Singaporeans are sniped and brought into government service at an early age. Others opt out and move elsewhere, most often to America or the UK. I’ve met some brilliant Singaporeans out in SF. There are no strong incentives for a Singaporean to pop out their head, for the cost of failure is often much too high, and the benefits reaped do not outweigh the sheer comfort. They’d much rather trade, live lives of quiet comfort & anonymity despite their immense privilege, which does not much to inspire the next generation of thinkers, darers, and doers. Many of them moved away. One must have enough chaos within oneself to give birth to a dancing star.

Yesterday, I hacked on the @EvenRealities G1 "AR" glasses (pic2) and did a presentation about it (+ demo) Put in a little Tamagotchi character that reacts It took me 4 hours, I deployed a companion mobile app that connects via Bluetooth LE (BLE) to hijack the signal from the Even G1, and display an ASCII Tamagotchi that animates (at about 2 fps) Since I couldn't really show it on a screen, I had to write a demo page. (pic2) I asked GPT5 to write one for me based on the repo, and it claimed the AI integrations were working. Probably after 1-2 more hours of debugging, and many more hours of tuning, could have gotten it to an acceptable level So I asked it to write the realistic page of what we actually implemented (pic3), and it told me "You're absolutely right! Let's be realistic about this..." And also a page explaining the architecture: G1 <-> BLE <-> Mobile Companion App <-> AI Services (ChatGPT/DeepSeek, eventually Souls?) It was very fun. Heads up display glasses are one of the few technologies that make me feel I'm living in the future. One of the better ways to spend a weekend afternoon It's a nice potential place to put a Soul friend, too...

There are better, far more supportive gaming chains right now. Currently solana does fuck all to back any games building on them.

1/ PROJECT "O" SO GOOD A team I've been watching closely the past 12 months @koingamesio just announced their first game @project_o_gg. These guys at Koin Games have been building hard for nearly 3 years and are bringing their first flagship game (a TCG) out of stealth very soon. I've had my eye on them for over 12 months. Looking at some of the other web3 games that had significantly sized teams with a lot of industry experience and who raised millions, Koin Games really stood out as a good long term bet to make. It was clear they were building the past two years, but building in stealth. So on the back of strong web3 mobile games with stacked teams like @InfiniGods, @fableborne, @koingamesio is a very very good bet in that direction, especially when looking at TCGs. And like the new wave of strong gaming efforts that actually have a real game close to the finish line, the gaming product has been built out over the past couple years with something playable at scale early next year. x.com/project_o_gg/s… I'm typically not that excited about yet another TCG game. But this one is something special.

After a 10+ year break, I restarted playing and logged nearly 400 hours in this game. And, it's leveling up with Web3. Get ready for the next chapter of MapleStory. I believe it's even more important to pay attention now because of the confluences of gaming trends. (A) Asian gamers are on the rise (6.5% YoY Growth) + (B) RPGs are the highest-spending genre ($25.5B in IAP) + (C) Gamers are moving towards more core games (+42% TAM by 2028) + (D) Web3 emphasizes ubiquity, transparency, and ownership "Wen game?" 2024 CONFIRMED soon™️ The more I played the more my brain got to working on how Web3 could have a novel effect on this game. 🧠 🧐 Sparks of innovative game design with a hint of financialization and incentivization systems burst into my mind. What if my idle characters could be rented out? How about a resource-sharing agreement between me and another player? What would an incentivization and reward system look like for creators and community contributors? Maybe portion block rewards, ve? I can tell you from first-hand experience the amount of effort it took for me to acquire certain resources and assets that are largely left idle for 90% of the time, and you know what we do with idle assets in Web3. 📈🆙 And that's just ONE thing. There are a myriad of other elements that would benefit from the workings of Web3. This makes me so bullish. Before we discuss Web3 though, let's talk about the Web2 game. My journey with MapleStory started nearly two decades ago from 2005 to 2010. After a 13-year hiatus, on September 29th, 2023 I redownloaded the game. For the past three months, I’ve clocked over 380+ in-game hours and countless hours on off-game research — watching videos, reading guides, and discussing on Discords. The result? My main character is a Lv. 260 Shadower 🥷 with 2.5k Legions. IGN: GoForKiet. But I didn't get to this level alone. I relied heavily on the community to help me as the game today is unlike anything I had played back in '05. This community has created guides, modeling tools, simulation calculators, and so much more. 🤝 💪 MapleStory's official creator program is called Bean Brigade and these player-creators are an integral part of the ecosystem. But there are so many other independent creators. A key resource for me is one of these creators' Discord servers. All the community support is voluntary, powered by passion and love for the game.
